How will plan B vaccination status checks work for crowds attending footmoneyball matches, the big ones with >10,000 attendees?

    All that segment of society:
    a) double or triple vacced?
    b) happy to share the QR codes on entry?
    c) willing to put limits on their 'personal freedom' to the greater benefit of society as a whole?

    Or...

Here in Wales we’ve already had these rules for the recent Autumn rugby internationals.
First match in Cardiff had a crowd of 74,000 to sort out.
They seemed to cope ok, although they probably had a bigger headache with the numpties who turned up totally sh!tfaced .

All it needs is the stewards to download the french TAC Verify app amd they scan the QR code from the NHS app. It really won't take any longer for people to enter the grounds as they probably scan their tickets to get through the turnstiles too.

If you won't download the NHS app or print off your QR code, you won't get in.
    Simple.

It's what much of Europe has been doing for a while.

    Won't get jabbed, then tough.

To be fair I doubt the vaccination rates will be that different in 'that segment of society'. Those attending football matches are probably a fairly typical cross-section of the population.
And those that aren’t will be running down the jab centre so they can go to the next match

You really “don’t get” football fans

    Anecdotal office update.

After a fairly raucous office Christmas party (where we all took lateral flow tests beforehand, but if anyone was naughty and didn't who were carrying, it will absolutely be a massive superspreading event), most people have decided to ignore the "work from home" advice and plan to be in as normal.

It counts for nought if people report a negative, having not actually done a test. Perish the thought. They don’t ask for evidence, just a QR code / serial number, and your word. I’m sure no one would take the piss. It’s up to each individual. If they choose to take the piss, that’s their shout. Nature wins every time though. The more people take the piss, the longer this shite continues.

Yep. I often think back to when we first closed the office in March 2020 and everyone naively thought they would be back 2 weeks later.I certainly didn’t imagine us still being in this state 21 months later.

If you're doing it properly you need to ID the person as well. It will add a reasonable amount of time to a process that already involves queueing.

Agreed, it isn’t straightforward for any large venue. Not saying it can’t or shouldn’t be done, just that it will take a fair amount of time.

My issue is that it will create crowds of people much closer together than they are in a stadium.
  • My issue is that it will create crowds of people much closer together than they are in a stadium.

I was at a major swimming gala last weekend. Swim England imposed very strict spectator limits in the competition arena, to the extent that many parents weren't able to see their kids swim, despite the viewing galleries being about as densely populated as the Marie Celeste when it became famous. However, the facility owner imposed no obvious overall capacity limit, so folk were packed into the reception / cafe area waiting to do "swapsies" on tickets with folk leaving the arena.

The obvious sensible course of action would have been to allow far more spectators into the arena, so they could use the numerous empty seats to spread out, rather than being plonked shoulder-to-shoulder outside the doors to the arena.

So the seemingly sensible course of action (in this case, spectator limits) can have unforeseen (but in reality, easily foreseeable) consequences.

The biggest irony is that swimming attracts people who like rules and the need to comply with them, so unjabbed spectators would be about as likely as hens' teeth whilst the gazzillions of unjabbed or half jabbed kids swimming were packed in tightly for prolonged periods of time whilst marshalling for their races.

If we'd thought about it logically then multiples of 6 months were never going to work as that took us to the start of peak season. We can only hope for 24 months. 🤞

I remember when the 19/20 grassroots football season was cancelled (typically we were in a cup final we never got to play!) at the start of the pandemic people were saying better just to write this one off and start fresh in Sept. When I asked what would have changed in Sept quite a few did react as if I was mad.

Has anyone had their works party, sorry 'gathering', cancelled yet?

We've got lucky as we have sole use of the venue from lunchtime until midnight. There's only about 30 of us and we're going ahead with everyone doing an LFT in the morning. Decided to scrap the ice skating and pub we were going to do before lunch though.

    Yep, all cancelled.

Had already decided That going was a daft idea. Mainly because of the company. I'm the office stud and the attention is really tiring.

My wife's usually perfectly sane colleague has been anti-vax throughout and won't get jabbed (not a requirement for the care sector in Wales). She then got Covid and felt so all, although nowhere near hospitalised, she decided she was going to get it. She has now had a change of heart as 'what's the point as you'll still catch the new variant anyway'.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the illness my wife had in March 2020 was an undiagnosed case of covid and that was it coming into our house.

Too many friends and family have tested positive in subsequent waves, people we have been close contacts of, for none of us to have tested positive just based on luck.

Some of my friends own bars / restaurants. They’re tearing their hair out. Some very big / lucrative Christmas dos have been completely axed, others have been reduced to the point it’s not economically viable to make it an ‘exclusive’ event ( whole venue used solely for the one group ). That’s caused friction, leading to mass ‘toys out of pram’ reactions, and cancellations. Some of them are hoping for a full lockdown now, because they previously got financial assistance for shutting.
