Just seen the news on Eurosport.
Massive shame but at least it should open up the GC now in a few weeks.

Is this likely to be a retirement for him (from the sport)?

On the bright side, summer hols with the wife and kids!
    Bloomin’ shame, though...
  • Broken femur now confirmed.
    Apparently he hit a wall.
Broken femur? Blimey. If severe that could be career ending.

No 5th Tour this year then...

Big shame as he was looking very strong.
No 5th tour at all, he’ll struggle from now on

Smashed up knee cap didn't seem to harm Valverde, or Gilbert once they'de allowed recovery to take place. It does of course depend on the severity of the break, and it's clear it isn't a Contador break.

Guess both full recovery and attempting a 5th Tour in 2020 will depend on motivation.

Hope he can come back strong. Someone with his palmares should be able to bow out on their own terms.

Luke Rowe recovered from his rather nasty leg break quite well also.

It depends how bad of a break it is doesn't it. Serious break then yeah it could be retirement. If it's a more minor fracture it could be a much shorter road to recovery. We won't know until some more is said. Reminds me of the thread on here when Van Vleuten crashed, there was a heck of a lot of jumping to conclusions then as well.

Michelle just tweeted from his Twitter to say hes on the way to hospital and further info to come later.

Is it a definite absence from the Tour or a Contador style break that he'll make a miraculous recovery from?

Some good riding by Wout, I didn't know he was much of a TTer. I dare say he's had less time than many find wind tunnels and TT position training, etc...

The TT skin suits really shows you who’s race weight cut for the mountains... it’s not you, Wout! You groot beefcake.

Ladygarden 2nd is a bit of a surprise.
  • Terrible news about Froome, really disappointing as he was so aiming for Tour.

Shame to hear about this before the GT. It can't be easy to deal with when you've put the effort into being ready.

According to ProCyclingStats they’re have been 19 riders with femur breaks since 2014. None have raced again the same season.

None of those who broke their femur after the 15th of May raced again that season.

Some of the Twitterati are claiming the crash didn't happen and it's all a big lie.
