Degenkolb has put his own money behind making sure the under 19 Paris roubaix will run and is asking for people to help him do so.

A guy gets pushed into Quintana and Sosa, taking them down.
Quintana actually managed to win the stage, (due to Lopez and Sosa playing at track stands with 1km to go) but Bernal had to go fetch Sosa twice on the climb.
All of which means that Lopez takes the GC,(I think) as Martinez was left lower down the climb.

Is that what happened... my feed went down just after the ar*ehole brought down two riders... one Sky the other Movistar... couldn't see it was at the time. Frustrating.

The feed was all over the place today. You could go back though, which is what I did.
Originally missed how Quintana got back and then made the winning attack.
Turns out that Sosa (with a shed load of help from Bernal during the climb) managed to reel in Lopez.
At which point, (the flamme rouge) Lopez thought it might be a good time to practice track stands.
Sosa joined in allowing Quintana back into the game, only he didn't want to play.
Instead he attacked and the numpties stood around and watched him go up the road.
All about their proximity in the GC, of course.

Anyhow, Bernal the strongest guy on the road today.

    Final GC:

1 LÓPEZ Miguel Ángel Astana Pro Team 18:38:32
2 SOSA Iván Ramiro Team Sky 0:04
3 MARTÍNEZ Daniel Felipe EF Education First 0:42
4 BERNAL Egan Team Sky 0:54
5 QUINTANA Nairo Movistar Team 1:04
6 URÁN Rigoberto EF Education First 1:31
7 ALAPHILIPPE Julian Deceuninck - Quick Step 1:33

A perfect example of persistence providing the spoils. Quintana was the 4th strongest in that 4 man group.
  • Not the greatest video but footage of said crash.

  • A catastrophic crash, right at the front of the entire peloton, took down dozens of riders and blocked the road, with 7kms to go in Algarve.
Only about thirty riders, mostly sprinters and their lead outs made it safely to the finish.
Most, if not all of the expected GC riders, came home in dribs and drabs, with various but sizeable time loses.
I won't spoiler the result, as I expect folks will be watching later.

  • well these small early season skirmishes are turning into just that! good viewing but must be stressful for the peloton.

This the teenies version of Danielson up the madone?
  • 20 year old L'Avenir winner Tadej Pogačar just kicked Wout Poels's butt to win the first mountaintop finish in Algarve.
    Remco who?

  • Didn't want to start a new thread for this so leaving it here - Ben Swift crashed during a training ride yesterday. Sounds fairly banged up according to his tweets:
Thanks for the well wishes. I am still in intensive care at the moment. But hopefully move onto a normal ward tomorrow. They have stopped the bleed in the spleen. But just need to keep monitoring it. Along with that I have facial wounds and road rash.

Fifth in the TT. Now has a decent lead and is looking good for the overall. If he didn't ride for UAE I'd have chosen him for my "my man" squad.
  • Several stage races were wrapped up over the weekend.
Astana's Jakob Fuglsang took the Ruta Del Sol title and Thibaut Pinot denied Ag2r a first win of the season by pipping Romain Bardet to the Tour du Haut Vat title, winning up Mont Faron.
However the gold start achievement award must go to twenty year old, L'Avenir winner, Tadej Pogačar, of UAE, for winning the GC battle in Algarve.

Stella sprint field at UAE Tour, with Gavira beating Viviani with Ewan third.
Kristoffer Halvorsen (Team Sky) finished fourth, Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) was beaten by his lead-out man Erik Baska. Making up the top ten were Modolo, Kittel, Marc Sarreau and Jakub Mareczko (CCC Team).
    Cavendish was somewhere further back.

Check out Roglic in Abu Dhabi. He’s going to be phenomenal this year. The Giro’s between him and Bernal, I reckon.

He looked really good...................right up until he got mugged by the boss.

Heh, yeah. Sublime from Valverde. But then very few have beaten him in those circumstances - and Roglic was pretty close.
I just think PR is the real deal, the full package. Last year, the only question mark about him was maybe his capacity to contend the GC over 3 weeks (he did get turfed off the podium by Froome in the TT at the end of the Tour) and maybe his tactical nouse. Perhaps something else will crop up this year, but the dude seems to be amongst the best at everything.

There's probably a track thread somewhere, but this involves a rider on a WT team.

Today Filippo Ganna did the the second and third best pursuit times ever, back to back on the same day. (The fastest was done at altitude and the holder was 5 seconds slower in qualifying this week). The next fastest at sea level was two seconds slower than his qualifying time. It looks like Sky have another potential monster.

While all eyes are on Belgium, this weekend, there are also a brace of really good one day races going on in the South of France. I say good, because they have become personal favourites of mine, due to both the quality and location of their parcour.

Today, we have the Classic de l'Ardèche:

    les-boucles-du-dus-ardeche-2019-profile-cadfa5f3ee.jpg

Tomorrow, we move across to the Eastern bank of the Rhone, for the Royal Bernard Drome Classic.

    la-drome-classic-2019-profile-ab45cc05c9.jpg

Both races have extensive coverage from L'Equipe.
The Classic de l'Ardèche will be shown directly after Het Nieuwsblad, from around 4pm, for two hours.
The Royal Bernard Drome Classic will be shown live from 1pm GMT, for three hours, but is an obvious clash with KBK.
So maybe the best option may be to wait for 4 hours of both races, back-to-back on Monday, from 12-30pm GMT.

There is a whole section, but nobody ever posts there.

Anyhow, Stephen Park's new "touchy feely", British Cycling has been looking pretty rudderless this week.
Seems like he's got a Titanic struggle on his hands to get things ship shape by Tokyo time.
Meanwhile, the Dutch have already dubbed themselves the new GB and the Aussies can't stop smiling.
Even little Hong Kong won more gold gong.

I think the women's pursuiters will be OK and I'd never count L.Trott out of an ominium. But elsewhere it's slim pickings. I wouldn't be confident on J.Kenny doing his three years off, one year on routine again. Marchant and Hayter are possibly worth a medal each. Ironically, the men's road may be more fruitful with Yates (x2), Froome and Thomas providing good options on for the men on road race and TT (the women's course looks reasonable for Armitstead too)
