When was the last time you went into a public toilet? They're always disgusting. No way would I want to drink any water from any tap in there. Besides, councils are closing them left right and centre.

Are you suggesting the water out of the taps is dirty?

Someone earlier called this " a bit of ribbing". This isn't "ribbing", it's online harassment and abuse.

You know what, fark you. I'm gone.............

What I meant was, if you didn't react so angrily to being questioned nobody would have jumped on the bandwagon, which is what has happened..

As a matter of fact I got angry for being castigated for not doing things the way some people here think they should be done. No one likes being told what to do.

This is the internet, you do understand how the internet works don’t you?

It's a bit overkill for SE England isn't? Besides, something that may be ok when you're hundreds of miles from the nearest civilisation, but in this part of the world you have no idea what people might have dumped into any water source.

How can something be overkill and not suitable simultaneously?

It's a good option. A normal bottle, fill it at the start, fill it every time you find a water source that's clean/purchaseable.

    Disaster strikes, use the straw.

What I mean is can that thing really filter out absolutely everything that might end up in a river in the heavily populated and industrially farmed SE? I wouldn't trust it.
If it's heavily populated there will be a shop nearby.

Cycling is supposed to the "green" option, yet for some reason a lot of people here seem uber keen for me to unnecessarily add to the mountain of plastic waste. Why is that I wonder. Anyone would think that maybe you have shares in some shop somewhere. Or maybe you have shares in a bottled water company.
Water from a café or pub.

Will they really let someone come in, have some water, and then leave without actually buying anything? I've already looked into the possibility of stopping at a pub, my preferred option, for something eat, and I won't be there at the right time.

Do you take your lunch with you or buy something when you are at the "attraction"? You could refill while you are there.

I take it with me, and see above. Also at least one of the places I'm thinking of going on one ride is out in the middle of nowhere with what looks like no facilities.

I'm suggesting that I don't know what has been done to the taps. Use your imagination.

Are you from 1956? Pubs don't have opening hours any longer. Tap water is free from pubs and cafes. Can't believe you've never tried that in 20 years of riding...

Carry a small disinfection spray. And take the filter bottle.

    Yes.

The one occasion I can recall in the last year where I ran out of water on a 1 day ride (route was unexpectedly hard and it was warm) I stopped at a pub and they were more than happy to fill up my bottles.

Just be polite and ask nicely, it goes a long way. In the event, I offered to buy a lemonade (I actually could have used the sugar to be fair) but the barmaid was happy to fill up for free.

Pubs are a good bet because they are open late too, if you're worried about cafes being closed.

According to the Licensing Act 2003 (Mandatory Licensing Conditions) Order 2010, which came into force in April 2010 and was updated in 2014, all restaurants in England and Wales that serve alcohol are legally required to give customers free tap water (the legislation for Scotland is the same, but it's a different act).

I can only assume that you've never been in a pub. Lots of pubs only serve food during certain times.

You mean the one that is only in a select few locations, and nowhere near anywhere that I'm going?

Richborough Caste for a start, and Buckingham Old Gaol (yes I know that's in a town.....). That's what I have in mind atm.

For the record, something I haven't mentioned is that I've been thinking of combining two of tours in the book to form one long tour of aprox 80 miles.

Chimera have you ever been in a pub ? What's good got to do with water? If the pub is open you can get a drink.

If you haven't bought anything, and have no intention of purchasing anything, how are you a "customer"?

And in the countryside quite a few pubs have short opening hours.

True. It's a lost cause. There is no water available in SE England. Have you thought of playing golf instead?

Richborough Castle - Gulf Richborough Service Station - 2.5 miles north open 6-11 7 days a week
    - Malcolm Waite Ltd - Service Centre & Petrol Station 2.3 miles south open 6:30 - 10:30 7 days a week
    - loads of other places in swandwich but yes, after 4pm on sunday might be tricky.

Buckingham Old Gaol Museum - Marks & Spencer Buckingham BP garage - less than 200 metres north east open 24x7
    - White Hart less than 100 metres south open 12-10:30pm on sundays, later on other days

    Cant see the problem here?

Being self sufficient, ie not wanting to stop anywhere, ie not wanting to buy anything, ie being tight. But buying an unnecessary bag.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

But on the other hand he'd never find the water.
