Good post Bally. I think almost anyone leaving here is a shame, especially those with a bit of knowledge of whom Ugo is undoubtedly one. There have been a few exceptions and I may have helped a few on their way. But if I think they should go they have scraped the bottom of a very deep barrel.

Its just sad that people cant ask them without being belittled ... everyone should have the right to

    (1) ask stupid questions
    (2) be ugly
    (3) enjoy eating at McDonalds without feeling guilty

really does it matter if someone asks stupid questions ... they don't need policing, its a friggin chat forum ... really no one is any "better" that the OP ... if you were, you wouldn't be on here would you ?

edit: When I say "you" I am not referring to YOU David ..... but the generic you of the forum :D

More of a size limit perhaps. I tried to stop the boy having them when he wanted one as a starter before his main meal.

    1) yes of course... when they become a habit maybe the issue should be addressed. I think you hit the nail on the head with the word "chat"... if you think a forum is a place to chat, then anything goes... I thought it was a place to ask and provide information which should be useful in principle. I wonder, out of 7 billion humans, how many think that leaving a bike on a kickstand might damage it

    2) FIne

    3) It's a popular habit among Audax people... especially the 24 H McD in the middle of the night... no guilt, when you are riding 600 km...

I like wasting time reading the bad advice beginners questions somtimes get theese days for some reason.

I think the people who gave useful advice left as got bored of answering the same question 1000 times.

People on cycling uk and yacf are more sensible & probably ride more miles but but don't have carbon deep sections.

If you don't have deep sections you're a noob. FACT.

could you imagine what it would be like if the Real world was like a forum.

    In particular schools.

Year 1 Child - "miss, does the circly bit go before or after the line when I write a "b"

Teacher 1 - "FFS you are an idiot, this question has been asked 1000 times already, cant you search for the answer, look at all the children in years 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11 that have all asked this before, cant you go and ask them, it isn't hard. I have been at this school for 10 years now and this question keeps coming up with all the new children that join"

Teacher 2 - " the letter "b" ... "d" it doesn't really matter what you want to do is write numbers like 7 or 9"

    Teacher 3 - " 1st world problems"

Teacher 4 - "when I was your age I wrote my 1st sonnet, I am leaving here and going to work at a university"

Teacher 5 - "teacher1,2,3 and 4 are a bunch of dicks, the circly bit goes after the line"

Teacher 1 - "we are not dicks but this question has been asked each year and the child needs to be put down and humiliated"

Teacher 4 - "when I was your age I wrote my 1st sonnet, I am leaving here and going to work at a university"

 Very good, could add students claiming they are lecturers at university.
  • Again, why do we have to accept that people need to be treated like children, when they clearly aren't?

There is nothing wrong to endorse a healthy dose of common sense... but this is not even my point... my point is that this is deliberate... taking the wee wee so to speak

In days of old, this level of off topic discussion would have resulted in the spanky stick.

OP has probably run a mile...

    No flounces yet...

    Is there life in Peckham?

It's not degenerated in insults yet and although I reported the thread for being utterly pointless, no action has/will be taken.
For me it is interesting to understand the dynamics... the fact that people only see a forum as a place to socialise talking about basically anything is new. I find it unacceptable, but others think it's fine. I wouldn't be surprised if the total mileage cycled per head on this forum was less than that cycled per head on a non-cycling forum

Now, that is a stupid question.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

You will find that a significant proportion of my comments are actually quite useful and only on occasions like this one I allow myself to rant a bit.

I am pretty sure I belong to the top 1% of forum users, when it comes to mileage, wouldn't be surprised if it was the top 0.1%

You will find the lack of knowledge is quite starkling these days. Last week I opened a workshop thread on how I fixed a Garmin... I thought it would be a very popular (let alone interesting) thread, given the amount of people who complain about dead Garmins... yet hardly anybody replied... nobody actually replied for a few days.

But when a thread about who should and who shouldn't wear lycra according to Chris Hoy's gaffe (guess who opened it?) comes up, they're all on it. What does it say about this forum?

Some threads get taken seriously, some threads missed, some threads get ignored, and some threads get ridiculed. Guess which category this thread falls into?

    Ridiculed...

The Garmin thread has not been ignored... hundreds of views, but nobody has anything to say, which points to my claim of lack of knowledge around here. I opened as a bait, hoping more people would come up with things they did to fix their Garmins... potentially a viable resource... but wasn't to be

Possibly depends on which section it was placed, or the title.
I never saw it for one.

I once bought a bike for a pound at an auction of police finds. When i tried to ride it I found it liked to go round in big circles to the left and on careful inspection you could just see that the whole thing was slightly curved. No other sign of trauma. I had imagined it had been pressed under a weight of garage clobber , or slowly squashed bay a car at the back of a garage, but the kickstand idea has got me thinking.

Workshop, obviously. If people don't look at the workshop section, that again says a lot about the forum. On LFGSS is probably the busiest section

  • What's a sonnet exactly? I learnt about iambic pentameter at school but never covered sonnets.

Ask your stupid questions. If anyone objects ask another one. Use aversion therapy to take away Ugo's threshold of boredom with questions.

Lighten up Ugo, it's only a forum. Look it up online, suggest Cambridge online dictionary because they include a section on internet forums. I don't think they rule out stupid questions.

It's a type of poem... 4/4/2 or something similar, could be 4/3/3 too a bit like football

Do you think this is genuine?

Unlike you or I a lot of people will not fix things like that. They are either not confident enough or view it as an opportunity to buy something new and shiny. I did repair my old Garmin 705 and eventually sold it. I replaced the bearings in my washing machine a couple of times before something else failed and I couldn't fix it. I have a £500 gas barbecue that was being thrown out as it had a gas leak, cost of repair was £15 to replace the knobs. I have a coffee machine at work that was being thrown out because a clip broke, cost nothing to repair. We are very unusual as we now live in a society that considers everything disposable, something that really irritates me and not just because I'm too tight to buy something new.

And how about this 15-year girl who wants a Garmin 1000 and a power meter, genuine or troll?

Probably genuine, it's the modern way. I was in a well known bike shop near me a while back, there was a lad that looked about 12 collecting his bike from the workshop. I hate to think what that bike was worth and he will outgrow it in a couple of years. But there's a lot of money in these parts.
  • I've seen parents on expensive bikes, in all the best kit and right with them was junior in similar. All looked like Garmin 1000 on out front mounts and full roadie attire. The only difference was size of junior's wheels. IIRC pinarello bike!

Some ppl have too much money IMHO. So that GPS girl that could be genuine.
