Leaving a bike on a kickstand for ages

Two of my bikes have a 'proper' stand that clamps the rear wheel and holds them vertically. My cruiser has a kickstand. If it's left leaning on its kickstand for a long time then could that cause any issues? I'm wondering whether there's more stress on some one side for things like bearings, spindles, bolts, etc?

only that it increases the chance of someone seeing that you have a kick stand

But no .. the forces involved in balancing a 16kg weight at 27deg are negligible for any of those materials .. well unless you have something made from tiramisu

Do you have some sort of 'random post generator' on your PC? If so, turn it off.

I once bought a motorbike that had been stood on it's sidestand for over a year. The tyres had not been pumped up and had deformed a little to the side as a result so it felt like it had a major problem. I used that to haggle the price down significantly, then rode around the corner to a petrol station and pumped the tyres up before riding home. Other than that absolutely no problem at all. A lot of motorbikes are made with sidestands only, they weigh a lot more than a bicycle and don't have any problems as a result.

What's it to you? This is a cycling forum and I posted a thread related to cycling. People like you reinforce my belief that many 'hard-core' cyclists are angry, miserable people.

If nobody posted on here because bullies like you tried to shut everyone up then you'd have nobody to slag off.

I'll post a picture of my new flower-patterned bell to cheer you up when it arrives in the post.

Your cruiser will weigh a tonne. It's not going to get damaged on the kick stand.

2.2 tonnes to be precise.

Thanks for that. It was just a thought as I can't ride all three all the time! The cruiser is only for sunny days so might not get ridden for a few days. Or weeks. Or months, given our weather.

Innocent, genuine question, or thinly disguised trolling attempt?? Hmmm.

It's a bike, and a cruiser at that. It will be unscathed if North Korea decide to test one of their missiles on it. I don't think it will come to any harm leaning slightly to one side...
  • It was a genuine question.

I was about to buy a second Topeak Inline stand for the cruiser as I have one already for my road bike and I have some credit to use up with a bike shop. However, as the bike already has a kickstand, and is my first bike that has a kickstand, I did wonder if the weight of it at an angle could cause things to weaken/shift as I may not get to ride it throughout the Winter months, given that it's really a Summer bike.

I thought that kickstands were for temporary use.

The bike will get set to that angle and will never go straight. Do not underestimate the seriousness of this isssue!
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Unfortunately he does have a point - too many people either shouting down, getting aggressive or calling troll when people post opinions they don't agree with.

No question is a stupid question - the only stupid things are the people who call stupid.

The signal to noise ratio on this forum is very low, possibly the lowest on any cycling forum. You can go on LFGSS, on T
YACF or on WW and you will not find the level of nonsense you find here these days
In other places users and moderators do a good job of getting rid of time wasters and trolls... here nobody does and the result is what we all see. Nobody is shouting and nobody is being aggressive, but foliks who want to talk sense on this forum are on a steep decline.

  • If it's so bad why are you still here then?

It's like you have a really rubbish pub next door to youths you hate but you still keep on going although there are pubs that you like much better six yards down the road.

And you've used "signal to noise ratio" a few times recently - what does it mean? Background?

I am slowly packing it up. After ten years, it's always a bit more difficult that it should to say goodbye. There are a few things I still care about on this forum, but I am mostly moving elsewhere, where topics are more in line with my interests ad there is less BS.

"signal to noise ratio" is a methaphor, it means that the actually informative topic struggle to get attention among the sea of nonsense. I would say half the threads are either repetitions or they are totally pointless. That is before we even go in the specific of the individual comments.

Genuine question: do you really think this topic has any point whatsoever? I am asking as I begin to wonder whether I am wasting my time talking to you

The biggest irony here is seeing matthewfail - who has previously been banned for trolling - defending threads like this. So the answer to your question is probably 'yes, unfortunately..

I do a lot of instructing with people from no experience at all to uber knowledgeable top of their tree. You know my job, you can guess the sort.

To me a newbie asking any question at all is not silly: if you can help someone and at the same time make yourself approachable then not only are you helping out the person there and then but potentially helping out him/her in the future and any other less experienced person that may look at the question and have something equally as basic to ask.

None of us were born knowing everything (Yossie excluded) - I bet even you had to ask someone about nipples at some point (obviously the wheel building type).

There are lots of people who call troll on here just because they disagree with an opinion - look at the CAAD 8 wheel change thread.

If you feel that way then it's disappointing but as a few people have pointed out before, this place is like a pub: pop in grab a beer, some pork scratchings and a pew, have a chat - ask questions when you need to and people will help.

This is exactly what we mean - the "trolling" was expressing an opinion people didn't agree with (I think it was about the use tubular tyres or calling people in cycling clubs "clubbies") so Imposter reported it with glee.

It's sad really, but hey - ho, if that's what floats their boat.

It's also why this forum has lost so many fun people over the last couple of years - those that brightened up people's days and raised a smile.

Anyhow, I'm out of it now - do whatever you guys feel you need/have to do.

No irony in your criticising MF for trolling? Your posts on this thread have added precisely nothing and are about as troll like as hiding under a bridge and jumping out at poor defenceless goats. You may find it a stupid question but the OP had a concern, however trivial, and asked the question. That question has been answered and now the thread is going rapidly downhill. MF does have a point when he says that there is no such thing as a stupid question if the person asking doesn't know the answer. He also takes the mick quite a lot, he's not the only one.

  • I do a lot of instructing with people from no experience at all to uber knowledgeable top of their tree. You know my job, you can guess the sort.

I have no idea. I have been moderator, but don't remember who you were in your previous incarnation. Pretty sure I was not the one who banned you. As above, a bit ironic that you are here defending time wasters... or maybe it makes total sense... I don't take particular interest in what other folks on a forum do in their life.
To me a newbie asking any question at all is not silly: if you can help someone and at the same time make yourself approachable then not only are you helping out the person there and then but potentially helping out him/her in the future and any other less experienced person that may look at the question and have something equally as basic to ask.

If you can't distinguish between a genuine newbie question (for which there is a section) and a time waster, then it seems more your problem than mine

Not on forums, at the time there was very little expertise on here. Bear in mind I came here well before the Cycle Clinic

We'll have to agree to differ on this. Unlike you, I DO think there is such a thing as a stupid question, and I'm confident enough to say it and will happily take flak from professionally-indignant individuals such as yourself in response. This thread is proof of both of those. My guess is that you and matthewfail/yossie will now both run off to your troll thread in BB and b1tch about this with impunity. There's irony for you.

Edit: oh, you just did

Veronese... I trust you are a person of good judgement. Over the past couple of months there have been a constant of at least 4 threads opened by the OP in the General section, as an old one splips down, a new one appears to plug the gap. While one or two seem to have a point, most of them appear to be utterly pointless. That is before we even look at whether they are posted in the correct section of the forum. For example, if this was a genuine concern, then it should go in the workshop section. It is not, it should go in the bin.

Of course we all allow a newbie to have a genuine question which has an obvious answer, but when this becomes a daily occurrence, then one has to start questioning how genuine these members are.

It is frustrating that an informative thread gets ignored, quickly slipping to page 2 that nobody looks at anymore, submerged by piles of rubbish of no use to anybody.

If people think that a post is either time wasting or trolling, why bother posting anything? It does not have to descend into bullying.
