Leaving a bike on a kickstand for ages

If people think that a post is either time wasting or trolling, why bother posting anything? It does not have to descend into bullying.

Why deleting the spam then? We could just leave it there to rot on its own. There is only so much space in the first page, even less in the top half of the page, which is what you see when you open the page... if it's fully taken by pointless threads then...

    A) there is no space for other more meaningful discussions

    B) Potential members who might have something interesting to say will be put off by the kindergarden nature of the forum

Veronese... I trust you are a person of good judgement. Over the past couple of months there have been a constant of at least 4 threads opened by the OP in the General section, as an old one splips down, a new one appears to plug the gap. While one or two seem to have a point, most of them appear to be utterly pointless.
I'd say my judgement is questionable to say the least. But maybe I like to give the benefit of the doubt on the days I feel more charitable. The OP has also asked for a section on leisure biking because he doesn't really fit into the road definition of lycra and drop bar bikes. Seems to me he is keen to cycle for pleasure but is not as worried about speed, power or distance covered.Hence he's a bit of a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. I know some people that are truly inept with anything mechanical and they ask questions significantly worse, a lot of them are customers unfortunately and I'm expected to be professional. Worse still they are working on cars which opens up far greater opportunities for things to go wrong. Maybe as a result of this I'm more used to what some consider stupid questions.
With regard to the rest of it and the trolling or messing about. It doesn't bother me, I'm guilty of it myself often enough when it's slow at work. The likes of MF and Piña do answer technical questions and make a valid contribution to the forum as well as messing about. I also am of the opinion that it should be light hearted and things written on a web forum should not be taken too seriously. But, as you know, I'm like that in real life too. At least I think I am.

Oh yes, this very enlighted thread about what to wear on the bike in autumn, which was gracefully received by the all community.

    viewtopic.php?f=40013&t=13084686

If you mods are happy for the cycling part of the forum to become an extension of the cafe' side of the forum, which appears to be the main activity, then fair enough. I suppose I am the one with the spanner looking at the other side of the building where trade in latte and bacon sarnies is roaring.

Genuine question: do you really think this topic has any point whatsoever? I am asking as I begin to wonder whether I am wasting my time talking to you

The biggest irony here is seeing matthewfail - who has previously been banned for trolling - defending threads like this. So the answer to your question is probably 'yes, unfortunately..
No irony in your criticising MF for trolling? Your posts on this thread have added precisely nothing and are about as troll like as hiding under a bridge and jumping out at poor defenceless goats. You may find it a stupid question but the OP had a concern, however trivial, and asked the question. That question has been answered and now the thread is going rapidly downhill. MF does have a point when he says that there is no such thing as a stupid question if the person asking doesn't know the answer. He also takes the mick quite a lot, he's not the only one.

We'll have to agree to differ on this. Unlike you, I DO think there is such a thing as a stupid question, and I'm confident enough to say it and will happily take flak from professionally-indignant individuals such as yourself in response. This thread is proof of both of those. My guess is that you and matthewfail/yossie will now both run off to your troll thread in BB and b1tch about this with impunity. There's irony for you.

Edit: oh, you just did

Sorry - final final post on this: me and Yossie are two different people - I don't even see him at the mo' because he's away doing stuff that you wouldn't even have the testicles to think of doing. Knowing what he is doing makes me think you should be slightly more grateful to him.........

I stopped reading after that. We both know that's a lie. Anyway, that's my final post here as well.
  • I'd like to see what an Internet forum would be like, pre 6th Century B.C.

Shout Internet turd : "THE EARTH IS FLAT, ANYONE WHO SAYS DIFFERENTLY IS A MASSIVE BENDER"

Person with contradictory view, based on experience, and evidence: "It's not flat, it's spherical, I can prove".....

Shouty Internet turd : "IT'S FLAT, YOU'RE A MASSIVE BENDER"

Person with contradictory view, backed up by irrefutable evidence : "Sod this for a game of Philosophers, where's my shouty Internet turd block button".

Is how I'd imagine it to be.

That happened much more recently than that. Search for user Manc33.
  • Okay, so the conclusion is that there would be no adverse effects of my 20KG bike on any of the components if I left it leaning on its kickstand over Winter. Cheers.

My missus has a Pashley, bought 2 or 3 years ago. It's been ridden twice in that time, the rest of the time it's just stood there leaning slightly on its stand looking lonely.
Could be completely bu**ered but I suspect it's fine.

  • To those who don't like reading my posts, you can go into your Control Panel on here and add me as a 'Foe' - if you do this, this is what happens:
Foes are users which will be ignored by default. Posts by these users will not be fully visible. Personal messages from foes are still permitted. Please note that you cannot ignore moderators or administrators.

    I hope that helps!

I'm also happy to leave this forum if you want me to.
  • No - why should you go? You seem nice.

    Please stay.

That would be a shame. There's obviously some history between some of you going way back but the technical knowledge you and Malcolm bring to the forum is great and much needed.

Contact Theresa May as she seems to be struggling to find someone.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

There was a lot more knowledge 3 years ago... Monty Dog is pretty much disappeared, then we had at least two frame builders with experience. The workshop section was pretty solid, now a lot less.

Now it seems the only section left with a fair bit of knowledge is training... which is probably a reflection of the average user, being "power crazy". Guess who pushed to open that section...

The reality is that the Audax-long distance community roams elsewhere and there is very little here. At the moment that's where my interest is. I am still on these pastures mainly for habit... you check your email, you check Bikeradar... it's part of the "loop"

Yeah I know the feeling. I came here from Cycling Weekly after the forum slowly fizzled down to about 7 active posters. There were a few reasons for it's demise but ironically one of the main ones was that a bloke who owned a shop and a couple of other guys with good mechanical knowledge to share drifted away for similar reasons to those making you consider your presence here.

Forgive me for jumping in, being green is meaningless now. Any moderation got moved entirely in house a while back for legal reasons supposedly. Only those in red can do anything.
  • If you leave a bike on its kickstand and it's a heavy bike I think you may slow down the rotation of the earth by increasing the earth's moment of inertia.

Interesting, what happens if someone already on your ignore list becomes a moderator? I imagine their posts become glitched.

If you have to preserve the total angular momentum (it is a law after all), then if you slow the rotation, you need to speed up the revolution.. basically longer days and shorter seasons... I personally wouldn't mind that...

Sure, but ultimately the problem was/is the inability of the current forum to do anything about it. That was the frustrating part of the story.

Are there silly questions asked on the forum? Undoubtedly. but so what? Perhaps it isn't silly to the poster. I've seen someone ask advice because his new shoes pinch his feet but he didn't get the sort of response kickstand man got.
Most people on here know more about cycling and bikes than I do and if I have a query, I can generally find an answer. Some people, one in particular, have been helpful whilst others appear to need an endoscope to shave in the mornings. You get to learn who can be helpful. Bit like real life really.
Regarding moderation, anarchy hasn't broken out since the boys in green lost their special powers has it? In fact, I feel the place is better for more self regulating.
Ugo, I will never be building or repairing my own wheels, I will be off to the shop for a new one, but someone on here will someday value your advice and help and I assume you would get satisfaction from giving it, so please don't flounce because you think we are no longer worthy.
Regarding the phone call at work, I trust the user got a permanent ban as that is outrageous.
Mind you, some people do take the stuff on here so seriously and really should lighten up a bit.

I don't know who he was... I mean, unofficially I do, but officially I don't. As I said, the frustrating part was the inability to get rid of some people. We used to be able and then no more. We all knew what was happening there, but our hands were tied. That was the reason I left the moderating team, since it was asked above.
