The wrong side of the hill

New commentary high point: Rolf Sørensen was pro for 17 years but only learnt to pee off a bike after 15 of them. In case you're wondering, to the right.

If Demare does manage to get home today, he's going to be hors delay tomorrow for sure.

Gap coming down to the break. Bunch motoring, will be caught by the bottom of the final climb at this rate

Knees drops back to second in the Sky train (Kwia takes over) after what looked like nearly 200km on front.

Direct Energie all over the front of the pursuers group. Got half their team away into the big group but missed the selection.

Burnt matches all over the road. Easy stage tomorrow though, nice chilled downhill coast to the line

Funfact: Démare is riding exactly in the fastest, from the ASO calculated timeslot. Just as a reminder how insane this stage is.

Matthews riding for demare to miss the time limit

Demare must be ill surely? I'd back him to get up any hill better than Kittel virtually every time so to see him dropped and Kittel get to the front for the sprint just afterwards was odd. Just as well Pinot isn't chasing GC as he'll be losing a third of his team.

The winner isn't going to come from the break today.

I thought Robbie Savage was on commentary until I saw Downing's name come up.

That's nuts. He could be in the break

I've had a weird reversal of opinion about Bouhanni and Demare: I now think Demare is a bellend and Bouhanni's alright.

I said we'd meet friends at 7 this evening so I had plenty of time to watch the stage. That wasn't necessary, could have easily met them at 6 the rate they're going.

I've always had a soft spot for bellends (no, not like that) so have always quite liked Bouhani.

Me too, I warmed to Bouhanni the more that people started to dislike him. Do like a panto villain and he was very impressive in the giro the other year, once kittel went home

    He's just misunderstood.

Anyway I can hear the race radio and Matthews has been dropped from the front group.

Cut off watch - Ned and Dave reckon Demare will have as much as 45 minutes to play with, not worried

Yep. Also Trentin is fighting to stay in contact.
Talansky and Calamajane have joined the leaders.

One thing this stage is helping with is that question many ask, and I've been guilty of myself, 'how does rider x keep getting a contract on a top team?'. It makes you realise how hard some of the domestiques have to work in the early stages when the cameras often don't pick it up.
