So few mountain stages this year someone has to attack, and soon, for the benefit of the race, the fans, and the sponsors. Or have they simply conceded that Sky are the best team and there is no point?

I think it was a Tour route designed to 'open it up'. Otherwise interpreted as disadvantaging SKY/Froome.

when i saw it began/ended with tt - given froome's tt typical performance vs. the other gc contenders - it felt more like it was designed to give him an early edge, defend on 2-19, with a handy time bonus almost in the bag on stage 20

Looks more like it was designed to open up the green jersey comp, rather than the yellow. Unfortunately, Sagan accommodated that wish for them.

    It's barely a 16 mile TT.

yeah but stage one was only 14k and froome ended up with a decent gap on aru, contandor etc., at that rate he'd gain a minute on stage 20

Carlton Kirby's doing my feckin head in. It's like he's narrating a health and safety campaign.

This week "should" be all about Thursday, and hopefully an attack on Friday to those with tired legs.

Tired French legs going for glory on Bastille day perhaps. Then today and tomorrow, they'll be resting up at the back of the peloton in anticipation of the effort.

100%. Well, 95%. The exception being Bardet.
    Today, sprinters. Again. Tomorrow, GC.

I loved the TdF for years but this year it's killing me. Froome and Sky have become cyclings Schumacher and Ferrari in that I grew up in the 80's early 90's enjoying F1 but once that combination turned up and bored me to death I moved away from the sport forever. Luckily cycling has added dimensions with one day races so even though it's only mid July...bring on the spring classics...for the love of God please bring them on!! I demand a muddy, windy and torturous Flanders race right now.

But don't you think that the Giro has been perennially better for eons? Even a dry Flanders is better than this and on that subject, Gilbert's win this year is indelible in my mind and stands as the best Flanders I have witnessed.

Le Tour is the biggest race but the Giro and Vuelta have always been the better races from an armchair point of view.
Race isn't over yet. I hope. This year's Giro didn't really kick off till the last week.

Froome has his own 'Wiggins' moment where he discovers a team mate is stronger than him. Landa's facial expressions, or complete lack of them that should be, in those last few km just made me laugh considering the gradient.

Tomorrow should be interesting too. The Cold'Agnes descent was sketchy as I remember it.
Then again I wasn't following motorbike brake lights on a closed resurfaced road. Nor did I have the desire, need or inclination to go as fast as them. Otherwise identical.
