I see Putin was happy to surround himself with pretty, young Aeroflot stewardesses today, but won't sit within 5 metres of any men....

    I've got a cunning plan...

Putin has declared that sanctions are an act of war.

Somehow I don’t see Zara, Paypal or Samsung sending troops to attack peace loving Russia.

Well, he'll have to be told it's not an act of war, just a `special financial operation`.

    So i follow this guy

Who basically tracks material losses in wars on the internet, tries to verify them (no idea how) and posts summaries.

He gets quoted by journalists various times which is how I came across him.

No idea if he’s legit or not, but this isn’t the first war he’s covered.

Anyway, explanation out the way, he’s been slowly getting more and more shocked by the sheer volume of Russian vehicle losses, and today’s flow seems to have broken him.

There's a graph on twitter that claims to show the volumes frozen. I don't think it is accurate, but it raises a valid point that volume might have more impact.
From what I've read the voluntary withdrawal of businesses is having a bigger impact than the official sanctions.

Interview with Fiona Hill on an economist podcast.

She feels the only likely coup will be by hardliners who are as or more extreme than Putin, and if Ukraine doesn’t fall quickly he will punish it by basically bombing it into the Stone Age. (To paraphrase)

She also puts him in the same pantheon as Hitler.

I have read something about Russians being short on “smart” bombs so pilots are having to fly lower to drop “dumb” bombs which leaves them more exposed to those kind of weapons - does that make sense?

They're definitely very low on smart bombs and cruise missiles - that's been covered by several sources now. Stocks drained low during Syria, and now even lower by this conflict.

You normally revert to dumb bombs when you have air superiority where you can fly low without too much interference from the ground - they have pretty much no accuracy at height unless you just want to flatten stuff (looks like that's sadly the case in many areas). Due to the above shortages and the fact that Ukraine still has an active air force, SAMs and Stingers (and probably a number of tracked AA guns) the Russians are playing a dangerous game flying low.

Interesting fact on which country has frozen the most Russian bank assets to date:
    https://telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/03/05/britain-freezes-russian-bank-assets-country-world/

    Quote:
"Britain has frozen more Russian bank assets than any other country as part of the international wave of sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, ministers have said.

The Foreign Office revealed the UK had frozen a total of £258.8 billion of bank assets, compared to £240 billion by the US and £33.8 billion by the EU."

Not sure where this rhetoric comes from that we aren't pulling our weight in this area.

I' surprised at you Bean. You've been on here long enough to know the narrative.
Apparently the UK had frozen a total of £258.8 billion of bank assets, compared to £240 billion by the US and £33.8 billion by the EU.

But that doesn't spin so well on Cake Stop does it?

The Russians don't seem to think the UK is not playing its part.

Maria Zakharova said: “The sanctions hysteria in which London plays one of the leading, if not the main, roles, leaves us no choice but to take proportionately tough retaliatory measures. London has made a final choice of open confrontation with Russia.

"Such a development convinces us once more that Russophobia and the aim to undermine the Russian state are integral elements of Britain's foreign policy."

Carry on gents, as you were.
