True story my grandfather played football for Holland but got dropped because he refused to play against the nazis (before the war)

Spent the entire occupation in hiding and so gave up going to uni.

Got the news clippings somewhere. This “sports washing” stuff isn’t new

    1936 Olympics?

I'm perpetually dismayed by government and sports governing bodies being unwilling to stick their necks out and acknowledge how powerful sports are for projecting national image.

Politics and sports are linked, let's not pretend otherwise.

For all the culture wars and chat about virtue signalling, turns out it’s the government that won’t walk the walk and just talks the talk

During the occupation in order to be allowed to do anything you were forced to sign a paper declaring allegiance to Germany.

    He refused.

And for those asking about China.

    See this:

Seems they are objectively reporting on the war. Not so good for Putin.

FIFA are going to dance on the head of a pin with this. No one will play Russia in WC qualifiers.

As I sit here now my guess is that Russia will qualify by default, because, well it's FIFA and FIFA are politically neutral and morally non-existent. And this will create a huge headache in Qatar, which is a sports washing exercise itself, because the conflict will still be going on.

I would find it funny if as a protest nobody went to Qatar.
Not going to happen, but it's a pleasant thought.

PS - Anyone think Scotland are going to throw their match against Ukraine?
Not lose as that's fairly predictable, but blatantly throw it.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Indeed, seems like having an economy smaller than Spain's doesn't give quite as much leverage as he'd hoped.

so far the official line has been pro-russia, but perhaps the ccp is realising that's not a good look

Pretty clear that Chelsea are just a particularly egregious example and most of Western Europe are guilty of giving Putin far too much rope.

Exactly that, you can understand (in a weird way) why Putin has such disdain for "Western Values" when he's yet to meet anyone who stuck to them when he opened the cheque book wide enough...

China actually feels like it would be a good location if Putin genuinely wanted talks. Probably the closest to a neutral company there is in this matter and not somewhere the Russians would try something stupid.

Foreign Secretary is outraged by claims we aren't doing enough for Ukrainians fleeing the war so posts link to her own department about how family members of British nationals who can apply for a family migration visa. Otherwise you need to get to a VAC in a third country and apply for a visa through the normal route there.

Taken a space in case people don’t want to see it but this is the video I was talking about re British anti tank guns and Ukrainians blowing Russian tanks up with em. It’s been verified I believe.

Who knew weapons designed to blow up Russian tanks were quite good at blowing up Russian tanks?

Pleased to see that those weeks before didn’t entirely go to waste by the Brit govt
  • Times reckons the SWIFT measures will knock 5% off Russian GDP, can anybody remember another Boris policy that knocked 5% off an economy?

Why does nobody ask him why one is a price worth paying and the other enough to bring a madman to his senses or lead to widespread insurrection?

    about time

shame they didn't long ago pause the shut down of their nuclear power stations until renewables capacity reduced the need to burn coal and imported gas

almost as if merkel et al. wanted to make themselves reliant on russian gas for the next 2-3 decades

    We

Abramovich has issued a statement saying he's handed the care and stewardship of Chelsea to the charitable foundation and trustees to try to protect the club.

    Diddums.
    What a pathetic response, Rick.
Whatever rumoured links he has to Putin, at least he's trying not to drag his football club down, and cause yet more upset.

Really? With how he accumulated his wealth I won’t be shedding any tears.
So you'd be happy for the club, staff and players to suffer due to Russia's invasion?
Yes. Yes I would. Similar to the Qatari World Cup. Reap what you sow. No sympathy.

Should your club have ceased to exist when it went bankrupt leaving debtors?
My football club is currently in administration - to be fair so what if it gets liquidated start over. Chelsea wouldn't cease to exist it'd just cease winning trophies.

At this point he seems quite delusional - I suspect the people around him are more rational
