Wasn't the explosion after the first one enough of a clue?0

That's what I asked! If I remember correctly, the first rounds were fired simultaneously from multiple tanks. Once they realised what was happening, they had to halt the next lot of tanks from firing off their first rounds.0

A very good read indeed. Thanks for that.
I wonder if the Russians hedged their bets that the AFU were going to encircle Bakhmut, so they pulled their own troops out, leaving Wagner to their fate. Meanwhile the AFU are letting Prigozhin have his ‘victory’ while they completely trap his psychopaths in the remains of the city? Russia uses the AFU to get shot of Wagner.

I'm no expert on military matters, but it all sounded plausible, given how crafty the Ukrainians seem to be.0 -
I've been wondering if this was part of the tactic... fight as long as possible over the rubble of Bakhmut to drain Russian resources generally, fighting block by block, at the same time encircling it and ensuring raising a flag in the middle of the city would be both Pyrrhic and fatal, with nothing left to hold onto it.

Something else is going on today. I've been watching the tweets coming in...

Twitterati suggesting that this is part of the lead-up to the counteroffensive (disrupting supply lines, and diverting attention/worrying the Russian population, etc.), but who knows? We'll have to wait and see, I guess...0 -

They do seem to be keeping Vlad guessing.

With ref to your earlier Twitter grab could you decipher this Rickesque graph and explain how this graph shows that Ukraine has surrounded Bakhmut?briantrumpet said:They do seem to be keeping Vlad guessing.

I doesn't, as far as I can see, but, er, stuff here, in this thread...

These Russian rebels are definitely ratcheting up the stakes; rumour is they’ve taken a base that has tactical nukes in it0

Seen the news about the raids into Russia, but nothing about capturing nukes?rick_chasey said:These Russian rebels are definitely ratcheting up the stakes; rumour is they’ve taken a base that has tactical nukes in it

I suspect it was a rumour; the base they claim to have taken has hosted tactical nukes beforehand.
Either way, the rebels don't seem a nice bunch either, but your enemy's enemy, etc.

Well quite. They seem to be a sort of anti-Wagner. And to the extent they tie up Russian military resources in the border area, the less then Russians have to fight with elsewhere.rick_chasey said:I suspect it was a rumour; the base they claim to have taken has hosted tactical nukes beforehand.

I'd forgotten about that major dam. What a nightmare!
It's got to be open season on the Kerch bridge now.0 -
Feels like the Russians are hitting Ukraine’s offensive plans quite hard at the moment.0

Anything the Russians claim to have destroyed will be pretty much garbage. They're on a massive disinformation streak at the moment. They've seemingly taken out dozens of Leopard tanks and killed over 1500 Ukrainians already. Sure they have.0

Some analysis on today's disaster. what might have caused it and the potential impact it'll have:

if you are going to blow a dam then having it brim full is quite a sound tacticddraver said:Is it better to admit you destroyed a damn deliberately or that it was incompetence..?
(no wonder Johnson and the Russians are such good friends...)0 -
I'm not going to hyperventilate, but it seems that stuff might be happening...

Yeah. It’s definitely go time.0

One thing the russkies seem to have done pretty well is contracting their defensive lines:

Things seem to be getting a little salty in Russia.

Indeed. The Russians allegedly bombed Wagner earlier today, killing quite a few of them. This should be. entertaining.
Meanwhile the AFU have started knocking out Crimean bridges with Storm Shadow missiles. Here we go again…0 -

I can't read what Ukraine is doing at the moment, which is probably a good thing. I suspect they are incrementally trying to weaken defences in several directions, so when they do decide to go all out that the Russians won't know here to turn. Or, more pessimistically, Ukraine did try to launch something more consequential, but it's not gone to plan.
Anyway, Russians fighting Russians has got to be helpful.0
