When you list out the stuff Russia has done in the last decade and they still got the FIFA World Cup and the Winter Olympics. It really does take your breath away that collectively we all just shook our heads and sucked our teeth. Even now the sanctions appear to be somewhat porous.

A thought provoking thread from someone who works for Navalny.

Not sure that's an entirely realistic thread.

Does make me wonder if the west should impose sanctions, publicise a way out if they cooperate with the west, then remove sanctions regardless and then sit back and wait for Putin to assassinate them for apparently cooperating with the west.

    • Sanction 6000 people they believe to be essential to Putin.
    • Sanction another 1000 every week.
    • Give them all a clear way out of sanctions like "A public statement, a massive donation to Ukraine, maybe a public confession about Putin’s crimes. Maybe some of them can get political prisoners out. Or negotiate something else. Or hire a hitman"

    Frightening nut jobs.

  • They’ve lost more than 8k vehicles, aircraft and other bits of heavy equipment now. 1500 tanks have either been destroyed or captured. 1500 is 40% of the entire operational Russian tank stock, however that total stock is to be taken with a pinch of salt.

May Day parade will be interesting. They have a choice of.....
"Why don't we have much equipment?" or "Why aren't we using this equipment?".
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

half of it was either knackered or just mocked up anyway so there will be no change to the standard running there.....

If they ask nicely maybe they can borrow the plywood targets from Aberporth and stick them on carnival floats.

Can’t read the article but is this relation to his comments following Zelensky’s visit to the US? If so I did think it was a bit of a slip up.

Sorry, that must have been payepwalled. Here's a quote:
Vladimir Putin should be punished for breaking his own law by calling his invasion of Ukraine a “war”, a St Petersburg lawmaker has said.

The Russian president on Thursday referred to the invasion of Ukraine as a “war” for the first time since he ordered Russian troops across the border in February.

Mr Putin insisted Russia’s goal in Ukraine was not “to keep stoking the conflict but, on the contrary, to stop this war”.

Nikita Yuferev, a councilman from St Petersburg, on Friday sent an official complaint to the Prosecutor General’s Office, asking it to investigate Mr Putin’s remarks to assess if he had violated his own war censorship laws.

“Putin called the war a war… Several thousand people have been convicted for saying these same words,” Mr Yuferev said.

“I have sent a request to law enforcement officials to seek punishment for Putin for disseminating fake news about the army.”

That's the more likely scenario. I bet he has a very badly built balcony.

    Along with Merkel.

You can see the logic: if the reward of access to western European & American wealth had nudged Putin into taming his empire-building ambitions, it would have been a good gamble on several fronts. Alas, it wasn't, as we've discovered.

To be fair, Peter Mandelson has a questionable taste in friends, even if he wasn't getting his mate Tony to shoehorn them into the Lords.
