I would echo this view of Russia. Imagine. Being on the equivalent of the M25 outside Moscow. Horses and carts on the hard shoulder. Old lady smacking her stick on the bonnet of six lanes of traffic as she crosses the raid to get from presumably her field to the blocks of flats on the other side. Went out of the sailing venue to the local shop and some guy is trying to sell me his toothless daughter age not known. Many men hanging out the dinghy park with ak47s where it was or clear what sort of threat we were being protected from. Organiser had to go into the centre of Moscow to bail out the Japanese team who got arrested for taking photos in red square. The place was a basket case in 2005 and this is not even the sticks.ddraver said:

That's more a case of them not actually having such things at home. I never really put much thought into it when I was in Russia but if you stepped out if the rich CBD zone things went peasant very quickly.
There are modern, flash appartements like those on the banks of the Thames, horrific looking, clearly Soviet era flats and then wooden houses and mud paths.
Guess which part the bulk of the army is probably drawn from...
Edit - terrible source, but this sort of vibe. The camera down the willy isn't anything like as bad as it sounds.

That I'm defending John may give you an idea of how misguided you are, he (and I) are speaking from direct experience.
Even on very very short, -25degC winter runs* I could get far enough out of an otherwise very rich oil town to see it.

You just need to do the maths to realise it must be like that. Population 5 times Spain, same GDP. Huge area means infra will not stretch too far out of cities.
Been off the beaten track just about enough to have seen the lovely warm weather version of poverty. Can't imagine its much fun in a continental climate.

This is the problem with Russia though. You are dealing with a state that is happy to start conflicts on other sovereign states land safe in the knowledge another superpower would not step foot on their land or they go nuclear. The population that is already mainly dirt poor are living under little consequence for their actions. Sanctions don't make much difference to them are they are already so insulated from the world.0
-
A couple of questions that I am pondering. How self sufficient is Russia?
How long can they go on with sanctions making little difference? The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
its not just Russins saying this though.
Here, Tucker Carlson, Fox presenter, stalwart of Trump has his say.

Indefinitely. They have a lot of natural resources. And they don't need to anyway, given the stance of China and India. That's about 1/4 of the world's population between them.pblakeney said:A couple of questions that I am pondering. How self sufficient is Russia?

My guess is that, in terms of subsistence, they're probably pretty well positioned. Minerals, oil, vast agricultural areas etc.pblakeney said:A couple of questions that I am pondering. How self sufficient is Russia?

However, there is a difference between subsistence and living as many in Russia would like to or are used to especially those toward the higher end of the socio-economic spectrum. As somebody said upthread, the sanctions are unlikley to make much difference at all to those at the lower end of that spectrum.
I'm pretty sure that if Russia got its shittogether it could be pretty much self sufficient indefinitely.Wilier Izoard XP0 -

That's what I thought, and feared. Unless someone up top gets annoyed enough to "hit" him then they make no difference.laurentian said:

Well quite. A lot of ordinary Russians have no internet access and rely on state TV for their view of the world. They don't just wake up in the morning and decide on their own that Ukraine is full of nazis etc.imposter2.0 said:

The control of the media in Russia and general (lack of) access to other more independent sources compared to UK or US means the situation is actually rather different.MattFalle said:He thinks it for the same reason as Trumpers think and say what they do and De Pffeffelists snd UKippers think and say what they do.

There are plenty of people who can see through the propaganda. It's not hard to work it out.

Only those with access to outside sources have the opportunity to see through the propaganda, so not your rural living or working class city dwelling Russian, or probably most of their older population.rick_chasey said:
