Simply compose to crop out the grey sky?
Probably get better contrast and colour balance too.

That's what I did with yesterday's Budleigh shot, but it's very limiting, and when it's as grey as today was, light levels are low for pretty much anything, and colours are washed out. With little contrast, even getting anything in B&W is hard... it's just close shades of grey, and no shadows. People were driving around at midday with their headlights on today.

I'm sure if I had to take photos every day for a living, I'd find ways to get something out of it, but it's hard work, and there comes a point where I'd rather just ride my bike.

It makes sense to use the space but I bet it upsets the traditionalists!

I seem to remember being told that in centuries gone by the church was the hub of the community. Quite possibly less stuffed shirts and snobbery.

That's what they need to get back to, to survive. There was a good piece in Graun by Simon Jenkins (who's written a very good book on churches) exactly to that effect recently. If they don't adapt, they really are going to die.

Did they use to heat them in the past? I know some have heaters in them now.

I'm not sure, but I find a hot organ works better than a cold one.
    Speaking from experience?!

    That's not grey, it's black.
Monochrome bikes are so boring. 😉
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Impressed by how vividly green the moss was on my walk today. Real contrast against the brown leaves and grey mist

A good example of where greyness adds to the effect, by highlighting the colour present.

Agree about the moss today, looked like toxic waste green.
    I spotted a woodland monster.

Tried a challenge to attempt making a grey sky interesting without resorting to B&W.

    Mission accomplished then. Thanks!

But it's not uniform grey. Neither is this one from this morning.

When I set out yesterday it was nice and sunny. I managed to get the shot of the sun through the trees but then the cloud came down and when I was on top of the hills visibility was down to about 50m. I came back down to go and pick my daughter up and 20 minutes later the cloud had lifted leaving blue sky again. Very annoying!

    Fair point.
I like the way the house and pier is highlighted.

Spooky, I took this one as it looked to me like a giant stick insect (couldn't get the angle I wanted as some had fly tipped in front of it!)

One of those mornings when one had to be quick on the draw to get good lighting. It was gone 10 seconds later.

I've been trying to do some longer exposure shots for things like water and clouds but on my phone even with an ISO setting of 50 it gets over exposed even with shutter speeds of tenths of seconds and I really can't get anything better the auto settings so getting better results using filters afterwards.

I'm trying to find my wife's DSLR as this thread has inspired me to try to take some proper photos rather than point and shoot.

Perfect morning for it today, did a 10 mile run up the canal and there were so many photo opportunities but I was running with others for a change so couldn't stop and only got a few at the start and finish.

I know what you mean about being with others.
Some of my best times on holiday are when I get up before sunrise* while my wife has a long lie and I go out to take photos. So peaceful and relaxing while everyone is still in bed.

*Assuming there was a quiet night beforehand. 😉

Ditto - 50-mile ride with friends, but left home earlier than needed so that I could take a few photos first, as I know we'd not keep on stopping for ride photos. A bit of sunshine sure brings out the colours, and no wind is good for reflections.

  • Is that a shared cycleway/footpath sign I can see?

Shame about the chimney throwing that muck out, otherwise very peaceful

Yes, and yes, although I think it's just steam.

The shared cycle path is one where you just have to be very tolerant of people with children and dogs scampering around off-lead. But it's a lovely way into Exeter, so if you're not in a hurry, worth taking.
