[Good to 'see' you Ben]
I really didn't like the Tate modern.
Went to the Kandinsky exhibition, which I loved but the building?
There was one area on the 3rd/4th(?) floor with a view out that I liked (long strips of cut outs) but the entrance vault and the harsh geometry and concrete made it an NCP building gone wrong with poor natural light and coolness that was unwelcoming. It's semi-brutal architecture.
The M Tate and the Barbican should be demolished.
There are some lovely areas of London and then you have these modern structures that lack anything really, mainly soul.
Hi Pinno. Are you well? All that you list about the Tate Modern is what I honestly love about it!
The Barbican is marvellous as well, IMO!Ben

A couple of ones from today's (mostly) sunny ride. I'll spare you my knaked knees, even if it was nice to give them a brief airing while it was (just) warm enough.

Tate Modern was a power station. The big hall was where the turbines were housed. That's why it's the way it is. You don't actually want lots of natural light in a gallery because it damages the artwork.pinno said:[Good to 'see' you Ben]

They could have put in a mezzanine floor in to break up that cavernous, morgue atrium.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
I'd hope your opinion is a minority as I think it is one of the great entrances to museums.pinno said:

Minority or not, that's irrelevant. Architecture is highly subjective and I am allowed to voice my opinion.TheBigBean said:

I'd say the turbine hall has quite a lot of natural light, but it's of course absolutely fine if it's not to your taste.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Maybe I'm missing something, but surely the size of the turbine hall is a feature in itself (a modern version of a cathedral nave "wow"), and it allows super-sized artworks which have been created with that size of space as inspiration.0
-
I agree with the supersize artwork point.
...and no to the 'wow' factor. This is not Westminster Abbey or York Cathedral with it's stunning stonework and beautiful arches, it's concrete.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

Never understood the whole stone = good; concrete = bad thing. The floor at Tate Modern is concrete but the framing of the turbine hall is mostly steel. The exterior is brick. It's a converted industrial building which looked like this.pinno said:I agree with the supersize artwork point.

Oh FFS.
Anyway, the turbine hall is roughly the same as it has always looked,1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Excellent stuff. FWIW, I don't think H&deM have quite pulled off the big ramp entrance. Something about the budget paving and the row of standard shopping mall doors with only one pair open feels like a lot has been lost between the concept of entering almost underground to emphasise the size of the space, and the execution.
There's a bit of a reactionary Traditional Art and Architecture culture war on Twitter at the moment - here's a beautiful old stone building; here's a nasty ugly concrete one! Wasn't everything better in the olden days? You can guess where the politics lean.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

I did actually see a mighty fine magnolia specimen today, but tonight's 50mph winds and torrential rain might leave it looking less spectacular.briantrumpet said:

Went to the recent renovation of Battersea Power Station recently talking of architecture - they’ve done a really good job of it inside and out. I could not get over how much repointing had been done. Worth a visit to view.
