  • In the interests of balance what have other leaders done other than weak words?

what is it that Trump has not done?

Merkel has banned all arms sales to Saudi Arabia for now.

Trump has lied that there are 1 million jobs created by an arms deal with Saudi Arabia as a justification for not doing that.
  • Trump is embracing full on lying as an election strategy again. And full on racism obviously.
Whether or not he knows or cares he's lying is slightly beside the point: it's his daycare team and the GOP who are not only allowing it but encouraging it who are the most culpable (along with the media who know it's good business). They could stop it at a stroke, if they wanted to, but it's serving their warped agenda.

Which elected member in the GOP do you think could stop it and then not get deselected in the next primary?

No idea, but if they had the slightest conscience, they'd put that ahead of defending Trump.

    It's OK, I won't hold my breath.

It still does not put Trump in a minority extremist position

And he needs Saudi Arabia to increase supply when he increases sanctions on Iran or the price will bump up and that will lose him support very quickly.

So, whoever organised the cover up made a bad mistake and should be punished. The murder, hey ho, but get who did the cover up.
PS - Yes, this applies equally to the UK. #easilybought

Isn’t the US becoming more self sufficient through onshore fracking?

Yes but Saudi is the biggest producer with the biggest reserves. If you put proper sanctions on them it would cause a global recession. If you push them too hard they might slow production and cause a global recession.

What sets Trump apart is his eagerness to defend despots, dictators and people of violence when it suits his personal interests, whether that be material interests or him just massaging his ego with false claims to his baying crowds.

Most other countries who have oil and/or arms interests with the Saudis have remained largely quiet waiting for the dust to settle and carry on as usual.

would you count this as better same or worse than a previous administration's reaction to Saudi Arabia over their involvement in 9/11. At least Trump has not punished them by invading a separate sovereign state.

Knowing what we know now about the origin of 15 of the bombers it'd be hard for anyone to beat the previous admins unerring support for the Saudis after 9/11 and their abuse of the situation for nefarious purposes.

We've learned that Trump doesn't listen to or read intelligence reports and he himself lacks the knowledge and intelligence of global politics to realise when he could use such situations for nefarious purposes, so that's a positive.

Assuming you are right and the US administration is not playing the situation for it's own purposes what actions would you like to see them take?

Maybe they should take the lead from the UK and condemn their behaviour in the strongest possible terms

suspicious devices sent to Obama, Clintons and John Brennan at CNN, similar to one sent to George Soros the other day, nationalist intimidation?

No, no; not Dumps fault. The media. Dump said "The media has a responsibility to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories”.

    Seems plain enough to me......

  • Wouldn't it be so much easier if media just supported whoever is in power? Even if that lasts beyond the two terms allowed for in the constitution.

Actually - in many cases that would be an improvement ...

The people who sent these devices got all they could ask for. They are not naive enough to think they would reach Obama or Clinton or Soros or.. but they did give their actions worldwide publicity.

With the mid term polls in a couple of weeks they have threatened Trump's opponents with violence if the Democrats do well. At lower levels, Trump's opposition will not have the protection that Obama et al have and may well be intimidated by these acts.

In a pre-Trump world it would have been right to publicise the sending of devices; post-Trump it is the opposite. Trump's supporters will know his posturing as an act put on by a man who lies as easily as he breathes. Wannabe dictators know that violence has to be part of their supporters' repertoire.

I get what you're saying, but you can't 'not' report bombs being sent to 2 ex presidents, keeping quiet could have the effect of "well that wasn't big enough for them to report... let's try something bigger.
Also, this might make the middle of the road 'decent' republicans think twice about their vote next month

So, DeNiro's restaurant is sent one too https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-45975447

...and all trump does after this is announced is send a tweet attacking the media:

    No condemnation.

How bad is this? It seems quite shocking as these are apparently pipe bombs.

Easy to imagine that level of response coming from a Communist dictator to attacks on their critics.

Lou Dobbs, one of his unofficial policy advisers has described them as "Fake News - Fake Bombs".

"The bombs each were made from PVC pipe with a digital timer attached to set off the detonator, the officials said. And each bomb also contained powder from either a low explosive or a pyrotechnic, as in fireworks.

Multiple senior bomb technicians briefed on the case said that the aspiring bomber had all the components necessary to set off a successful explosion."

One sent to Joe Biden too.

So, it's completely clear that these have been sent to critics of Trump. It is also clear that trump has whipped up bad sentiment from his followers towards these critics.

Trump is in a unique position to ask these supporters to calm down, condemn all this, to tell them they are doing wrong, to disassociate himself from them. Instead, he criticises the media again, fuelling the fire more.
