Aw shucks <embarrassed emoticon> thank you. When its set up as I ride bikes (well high saddle, massive drop to bars - I'm an "all legs 6'1) and its taped/cabled/caged its gonna rock.

Lowering the bars - undo middle bolt in quill stem then raise/lower or do I need to undo the top bolt of the headset as well? At the moment no movement when just undoing middle bolt.....

I'll admit it looks better now, I'd be intrigued if I saw it. I still can't see beauty but I can see the pleasure in it.

May become too hipster but be interesting to see what a tri spoke wheel looked on it

    Anyway coming along nicely MF

That's what I did and it still don't work innit. Its like shyyyt, innit. Be a charming fellow and sort it out for us from the above links won't you? After all, its for your benefit - I can just go into the kitchen to have a look at it anytime I want, you motley bunch have to wait, dribbling, panting, itching for any morsel or scrap of bicycle delight I decide to discard off my Table of Holiness at any time I feel like.

Thank you. I have a full carbon HED rear disc that I got for nothing sitting in my daughters Pina TT bike (she's 9 by the way) that I may throw in just for giggles and post a piccie up here. 60 carbons deffo though. Did I mention that I also got the TT bike for nothing?

It has to be seen in the flesh - the green is a tad lighter than that really nice lime green Cannondale used, the other colours are all pearlescent - all works really well. Still some minor rust patches (look like stone chips) and some tiny bubbling under literally a couple of bits of paint but leaving these for patina.

Undo the middle bolt in the stem only, the headset shouldn't need to be touched to adjust the stem. If there's no movement, with the allen key still in the bolt, tap the allen key, it shouldn't need much force - this should help. You may need to run penetrating oil (any 'thin' oil) down the outside of the stem and leave it to soak for a while. When it's loose, remove and re-grease the stem bolt and wedge.

No initial luck on hammer tap - need some penetrating fluid for the seat post anyhow so will spray a load of that down there at the same time and revert accordingly....

Looks like Keos are going on there - no dramas re sacrilege I presume?

No. Especially if they are black.

Is there any other colour? Anyhow, we all know that the more black bits you have on your bicycle the faster it is.....

They'll be off N2 bike later today and fitted (means I have an excuse to buy new ones next pay day for N2 bike so soften the blow as it finds out that the Merckx now N2 bike)

Just noticed the way the gear cables run in a purpose built tunnel through the frame under the b/b negating the use of one of those small plastic bridges - piccies to follow.

    This thing is sweet......

Turn it upside down and spray/oil it from below as this will guarantee you get to the wedge which is corroded to the tube, then loosen the center bolt and hit with a sharp tap (or a hammer if you don't have any plumbing parts to hand :D )

No luck with hammer tap. - main bolt is out completely, bike is upside down and penetrating fluid soaking in - any suggestions?

Long bar down the forks and gentle tap or does the headset sit in the way?

    Many thanks, M

Put the bolt back in and make sure it is in the wedge by more that a few threads, then tap directly onto the bolt. If you have an old bolt that you don't mind abusing, maybe a bit more force that a tap will help. Don't put a bar down the forks, it may jam the wedge in further. This is what they look like when removed:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Quill_stems.JPG
The stem on the right has the wedge going into the stem which splays the shaft when the bolt is tightened; on the left the wedge pulls against the bottom of the stem.

Ta muchly - have been trying tapping directly onto the bolt - having removed the bolt I can see a lot of crud so can imagine whet it will be like in there.

If no luck tapping the bolt any other ideas? Or just drop off at shop and let them do the seat post and stem at the same (had a quick play with the seat post last Friday but no luck there either....

On a good note - both Chorus and Record brakes have been sourced - huzzah!

If the shop are going to look at the seat post, that's a good idea, you don't want to welly it too much. Just one thing flirted through my mind - does the shop have some 'older' employees who actually know what a quill stem is? (call me paranoid, I just wouldn't want some of the larger stores messing with all that loveliness)

    We have success!!!!!!

She'd loads of penetrating spray left in over night, looooong piece of threaded bar into the bung instead of bolt and a gentle push with my hand and the bung pops out - huzzah!

Now it's out I see exactly why tapping it from below would only make it worse - I originally thought it was and expander type affair, not conical. But all good now thanks to you :)

Stem still doesn't up or down though, even with no bung or bolt in - any ideas?

Re seat post - seat post top in vice and use bike as leverage just resulted in vice being ripped off the bench. Next stop remove b/, penetrating fluid in from below and let soak for a few days?

Thank you very much again for all your help so far.
