In principle what's the difference between bringing room your own RV as a competitive advantage and bringing your own chef for the same reasons?“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0

#FBF to that time I slept on the floor at the TDF.. More of that this year! Good going @UCI_cycling #progress
For the times I've been involved in European Hockey tournaments we've always had hotels provided for us (we have to pay). However, on several occasions we've taken a look and gone somewhere else without a problem. In the late 2000s we wouldn't go anywhere without a swimming pool ('recovery' apparently)Twitter: @RichN950 -

I know Sky got stick when people realised that they were driving mattresses between stages and changing them in the hotels they were staying in. But when you see rooms like this you can understand why.
I couldn't give a monkeys about staying in a room like that. I've stayed in Formule 1 sweat boxes on occasions, but I'm not racing in the most important stage race in the calendar, I'm just breaking up a long ride.0 -
I'm struggling to get the fuss over these rooms tbh. It's only a place to sleep for the night.Team My Man 2018: David gaudu, Pierre Latour, Romain Bardet, Thibaut pinot, Alexandre Geniez, Florian Senechal, Warren Barguil, Benoit Cosnefroy0

Why not make them all eat at McDonald's or KFC instead of having their own chefs? After all it's just a place to eat for the night.Twitter: @RichN950 -

They should tell them all to ride Raleigh Choppers as well. I mean, it's only a bike to ride for the day0 -

Because that isn't analogous. And I'm not making anyone do anything. I'm simply perplexed at why people struggle to rest properly on perfectly adequate room.Team My Man 2018: David gaudu, Pierre Latour, Romain Bardet, Thibaut pinot, Alexandre Geniez, Florian Senechal, Warren Barguil, Benoit Cosnefroy0 -

Sleep and rest is a massive part of performance, so why should they be sold short and given no choice while the UCI officials will be in Four Star all the way?
If riders are obliged to stay where they are told it needs to be Three Star minimum with options of single rooms for all riders.Twitter: @RichN950 -
Do sky not look at the rules?
And why this rigid belief in the rules? Can they not be challenged? Especially when they are probably in contravention of much larger laws.Twitter: @RichN950 -
Ah, didn't realise the rule was just changed.
Not sure what me looking at rules has got to do with anything - i'm not part of a professional cycling team! Cool ja beans!0 -
I thought you were all about following the rules Rich?

Me too, so long as the food is OK. I imagine those pics are the worst they've had to stay in too - not the norm - can't get too excited about it.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -

I won't support a rule that I think is stupid. I generally don't believe in complaining about a rule after the event. But this isn't after the event.Twitter: @RichN950 -

Richie Porte taking it in the bibs for the unfairness of his Giro accommodations. Obviously that 2 min penalty was deemed insufficient punishment. No kennel for Le Dog.Article 2.2.010 has been amended to read: “In all road stage races on the international calendar, the organisers must cover the subsistence expenses of the teams from the night before the start to the final day; riders must stay in the hotels provided by the organiser throughout the entire duration of the race.”
In a press statement, the UCI justified this change, saying, “The decision was made in order to reaffirm absolute fairness between all riders.”

Strangely, elite athletes managed to sleep in far, far worse lodgings for decades before this... Merckx recalled complaining about Molteni being put on campbeds in a school gym once."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

I'm aware of all of that. The trouble is that the TdF has a huge entourage who all need accommodating. Some areas in France have a greater supply of hotel beds than others. So in the areas where there are fewer beds one team can end up in a palacial rural 5 star with air con, while another team can end up in a Premiere Classe/Etap/Formule 1 sweat box. Or one team can end up with a 90 min drive to their accommodation, another can be a few mins down the road. It clearly isn't a fair set up.
I'd like the riders, especially the big favourites, to have the best chance of performing. Not have excuses of sleepless nights due to a crap hotel room/bed.
Having stayed in a perfectly decent but airless hotel room in Lyon when it's 30c+ over night, I know what it can be like. As the main driver I pulled rank at about 3am and walked out to the car park to sleep on the back seat of the van with all the windows open. Friends in a different room wet towels and slept on them to keep them cool. Now I didn't have a stage of the Tour to do, but did have a 6 hour drive - not something that is safe to do on no sleep.0 -

Interesting thing about this rule is that it states "all road stage races on the international calendar... must stay in the hotels provided by the organiser".
How about those stages or entire races that are within many riders backyards? Every stage of the Tour of Belgium must be within an hour of the homes of most Belgium based riders. I think Frenchie mentioned a stage of the Giro that finished in a town where Contador and Aru both have flats - he wondered whether they would be staying in their own places.
Seems a bit of a silly rule.0
