What happened to the £ - euro rate?... hadn't looked for a while, wondered if now might be a time to buy some euros, but the £ has sunk to 1.10... genuine question... thought with Italy looking like a basket case that the euro might be suffering.

It's moved quite a lot for FX....but ultimately we're all in the same boat.

BoE cut rates 50bps. ECB didn't.

Not much makes sense at the moment, but I suppose that might!

The ECB can't really cut anymore and if they did would it make any difference. They are firing blanks on interest rates

With hindsight it might have been a good time to get out. All countries are going to have a massive financial hit but those EU countries just getting back from the financial crisis that rely enormously are tourism i.e. those on the Med are going to really struggle to recover.

May as well get it over with now and any financial impact can be blamed on the virus then!

For those of us the wrong side of the paywall could you tell us why we would do that?

Basically, bigger fish to fry right now and the health risks of groups in closed rooms for long periods (even if this is by videolink).

Blimey, £ in freefall at the moment - down to 1.065€ now.

Michel Barnier has tested positive for Coronavirus:

An extension is looking more and more likely in my view.

Politically, and practically, I can't see any other option, not least because of the number of the civil service who are going to have to steer us through this shïtstorm and the aftermath, whenever that might be.

In reality both sides are in the same boat with this current cr@p, so I can't see any objections being raised.

I thought their position was that six months is impossible so a two year extension was ours for the asking.

I am not convinced Boris wants more than a few bilateral deals so why would he ask?

I've not seen 6 months mentioned before - the only options available are a 1 year or a 2 year extension. As to why would he ask, maybe because we have bigger fish to fry just now as mentioned before?

6 months to get a deal, two year extension on the table.

My point is that he seems not to place much value on a comprehensive deal so why delay?

    The deal isn't the issue.
It's the leaving that's the issue.

Everything we need to set up to leave drains resource.

Fine, the people who wanted to leave won, there's nothing can be done about that.

We've left the EU and we'll leave the transition arrangements
To do so now is mental

I think Boris’s leadership will be holed below the waterline by what will come to be seen as his failures in the Covid19 crisis. I think he will revert to type by talking optimistic nonsense to get his Govt back on track and press on with Brexit.

Your 99.9% prediction presupposes that Brexit is an act of economic madness. If you thought that it was the start of us regaining the greatness of Victorian times then you would see less need to delay leaving and indeed speed up departure.
