Do you save by ordering small stuff from Germany?
I've tried alternatives, but keep coming back to Stans
I'm living in Vienna, shipping is EUR 6,-, so even if I don't order anything else together it is probably cheaper than at any bike shop around (which are a bit posh around here).
What was wrong with the alternatives? This wheelset is supposed to be reliable (winter wheels), so if I can get extra reliability by going with Stan's or DT, then fine, otherwise if it is just branding then I'll go with cheaper.0 -

I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Var tape is a bit thinner and just as sticky as stans. Some rims just need the stans tape due to its thickness other benefit from the var tape.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Thanks too, but I'll wait until I see the options (and prices) they offer. But I suspect I will probably prefer just buying the rims for my own build.0 -
I can recommend Moonglu Wheels, I bought a set of hand built DT Swiss 350 Road Hubs on DT RR 411 rims for £550, bombproof.0

Ok then they're reliable and well built and actually quite light, I'd Put them up against any stock aluminium wheel set, regardless of brand or price.0 -
Am looking to get a pair of 50mm carbon disc brake wheels (QR, not TA), preferably able to run tubeless. Prefer to not pay over £1200. Any suggestions?0

I will be talking to mavic again but my understanding is the Exalith rim coating wont be available this year. So I dont know why strada are taking pre-orders, unless they know something I don't.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Hunt do there version, I do mine. I think wheelsmith do one, spokeman wheels probably do to. Try strada..... So many. they will all be wide tubeless, u shaped and well built. All under £1000 so your spoilt for choice kingstonian.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Nope, Just the standard Black with silver braking surface.
Just curious if there is anything else worth looking at.
The build will be classic, using silver 105 and Nitto finishing kit, PDW mudguards etcTrek,,,, too cool for school ,, apparently0 -

If you are running to a budget, then the Chain Reaction / Wiggle's own brand Prime RR50 or RP50s are reasonable and fit the bill. Pretty much the standard chinese carbon rims and I expect the hubs are a generic from the usual sources. But they come set up for tubless with all the bits and includes skewers. I doubt they'll have the attention to detail you'll get from proper hand-builts but you'll have a UK based warranty and a price similar to the direct sales farsports type of wheelsets direct from China.

As others have said, Malcomb will build a great set - anf they're a little bit wider than the above:

So going to ask what is a most likely a really straightforward question and hopefully one that will not get me laughed at.
I understand that you can get rotors which are centrelock or 6 bolt. On both my existing wheels (Fulcrum sport which came with the bike and pro lite revo) I'm using 6 bolt.
I'm thinking of getting another wheelset. Can I use centrelock (assuming I get new cl rotors). I know I could get cl to 6 bolt adaptors but was wondering if I could do away with that faff.0 -
You can.Trail fun - Transition Bandit
Road - Wilier Izoard Centaur/Cube Agree C62 Disc
Allround - Cotic Solaris0 -
Thanks for the prompt and succinct reply lbs.
All immaterial now though. I was thinking of buying the Hunt aero light disc wheels and Hunt have just upgraded them and the v2 are now no longer compatible with 15mm front thru-axles. Slightly annoying!
Time to start the search again.0 -
Hi all,
New here so go easy...
I'm building up a winter trainer and all that remains to get are disc wheels. Usage will be entirely on the road and I want it to be fast-ish (for flavour, the remainder of spec is 105 5800 and carbon/7075 finishing kit); me + kit is around 90kg at the very most. Frame has clearance for 28mm, QR front and rear and I want to run tubeless having had great experience with it on my tourer.
I've been watching ebay for a good while aiming for 2nd hand pairs of fulcrum 5 DBs/Kinesis CX v4s etc. but haven't won any yet so am reconsidering doing my first hand build. In light of this, here is where I'm currently at:
- Pacenti SL25s are cheap on Planet X at the minute (£20 for 24 hole, £30 for 28, + £15 for p&p though)
- Novatec D791/792SB hubs
The things that remain to be figured out are:
a) can I get away with 24/24 or 24/28 or am I being an idiot and should just go for 28/28 and forget about saving £10?
b) what spokes and nipples should I use? - I'll be riding through a Northern winter though the tourer will take the brunt of the really awful days
Any and all help would be much appreciated.
Best,
P0 -
Just to be clear - you can use adaptors to run 6 bolt rotors on centre lock hubs but not to run centre lock rotors on 6 bolt hubs. Obvs CL rotors with CL hub or 6B rotors with 6B hubs are fine (as intended).
If you have a road bike, the big advantage of centre lock rotors is the ability to use the Shimano freeza finned rotors. Other than that neither is better than the other IMO.0 -

Had a feeling that would be the answer...
In which case, £75 for the pair of rims. Anything else that can compete with pacenti SL25s at that price before I pull the trigger on some?0
