Road tubeless tyres, where and how much?

  • Right, I can't be bothered to go through all 24 pages of this thread and the search function is rubbish on here. I have Achetype rims and I wanted to checked what width tape you need to use on them to go tubeless. In addition what tape do people use with these. Cheers

19-21 mm, depends on what you find. I use the cheap yellow Tesa stuff from Ebay... comes in rolls of 60 mt. Buy big rolls, there are a million reasons why you might have to change the tape at some point (a broken spoke, water in the rim etc... )

I have a new pair of wheels (Kinesis CX Crosslite) and some rim tape. Online guides suggest cleaning the rims with rubbing alcohol (which seems to be a US term). What do you guys use, if anything?

Use electrical contact cleaner, otherwise know as carb cleaner. You can buy it from Halfords in aerosol form. Alternatively, buy a litre of bio ethanol from a diy store.

That sounds more like something to do for cleaning down the rims of tubs?!? Not commenting on whether it's useful to do it or not, but the UK equivalent is either surgical spirit or isopropyl alcohol.

    IPA* = electrical contact cleaner.

*Isopropyl Alcohol and not Indian Pale Ale.
  • Help!

Spent good part of 2 hours trying to fit some Schwalbe One Pros (25mm) onto my Zipp 30 Course wheels. No success.

One inflated to 20psi but no further. Other not a sausage. Used up 5 co2 canisters trying and crucified myself with the track pump. Had lubed the beads, made sure was seated over the valve

See the pic of the one that partially inflated its compressed into the rim and leaks . Any tips gratefully received or I'm cutting my losses and putting them on the classifieds!

This normally happens with inner tubes, not without. Are the rims tubeless?

  • Yes are tubeless rims.

Success have one on. Used a DT Swiss valve and after about 20 mins on it went. Tried the Zipp supplied valve on the other and no joy neither with a shimano. My track pump needs at least 20mm to get a good bite and on these there was about 15mm so couldn't get enough air in. Also found the rim tape hadn't been stuck down into the grooves where the tyre connects. Ran a tyre lever round and this seemed to help no end.

Got there in the end have just ordered another DT Swiss valve

Beardy may have beated me to it but I just picked up a set of One Pro's from my local Trek dealer in The Hague. If you re keen to try them or your others are wearing out then maybe give yours a try

They went up no trouble on the 2 way fit rims as usual and I ll give them a ride tomorrow if I'm not too ill still. They are eye-wateringly expensive however (70 EUR) so they'd better feel like flippin' lightning bolts!

Having recently installed 2 sets of tyres I had success when first inflating using an inner tube and leaving for a few hours and then removing the tube only unpopping one side of the tyre. Found they inflated easily afterwards with only a track pump.

The biggest issue I had was getting the pump to connect ti the short valve on the inner tube, the tubeless valves were ok.

OK, well first ride today (25c version over Dutch pave and bike paths) - They do feel really good. Better than the One's. That said the One is already an exceptional tyre so I have to say that the difference, though noticable, is fairly minimal. I had the impression that the rear was losing air but actually when I tested the pressure afterwards it was the same so that was purely my imagination. There is a sort of feeling that you are pushing against nothing as you ride as the rolling resistance is so low (is this what tubs feel like?!?). Cornering grip was much like the Ones but we did nt do a particularly extreme route in that respect.

That said, as we head in to winter I'd hold off on paying full price for these now and just replace your worn tyre with the standard One then splash out for these next spring when ze German sites will have them all on offer.

Got my Pro Ones from Starbike.com at €46.90 each.

Are the Pro Ones supposed to be harder wearing the regular Ones? Or are they a tubeless racing tyre? I only ask because I wasn't exactly thrilled at the lifespan of regular Ones.

I'd say they ll be similar, if not worse than the One's in that respect

NB - It lookes like the Pro One will replace the One as the "road tubeless"option. THe One will just be a "standard" clincher - the website is not super clear though. Tubeless info is on the ONE page but if you select Tubeless Ready on the list page before the One is removed...? Very inefficient!

    Next time check mantel.com: € 39,95 to € 49,95 depending on size....

Another great option for the winter: 28mm Hutchinson Sector tubeless.

  • Okay still having issues with one tyre.

Tried the tube to stretch it but took it out tried re-inflating with the track pump and nothing. When inflating with the tube in there get several load pops as the bead hooks into rim.

Tried with the air pump compressor from my car with the inner core removed to get a shed load of air in but nothing.

I have to say the tyre isn't tight on the rim. May try a garage compressor that has higher pressure rate

Something's up there brad - Maybe try retaping the rim or putting an extra layer on? it really shouldnt be that hard

Review of the Pro Ones on the main site - http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/category/components/tyres/road/product/review-schwalbe-pro-one-tubeless-49856/ - I agree with him completely really. However I'd say they arent really meant for use on Gravel so riding them on it and then complaining about longevity is a bit of a jip.

Rim tape came pre installed on the wheelset (Zipp Course 30).

Tried again tonight but nothing air just leaks out all around the tyre just no inflation whatsoever. As I say the tyre is not tight on the rim at all I can get a finger between. Faulty tyre? I know they're supposed to be easy to put on the rim but the 1st tyre required a lever this one it's easy to just lift it onto the rim with my fingers like a clincher.

Yeah, that sounds weird. You could try bulking out the rim tape with electrical tape I suppose but the tyre beads should be tight - IMO Schwalbe beads are super tight anyway so it's particularly strange
