The Irony Thread

Pretty sure it was said on here but I'm not going to trawl through 1000s of posts to check. It was definitely repeated in spades on Twitter and social media. A notable example was by Terry Christian who tried to resile from wishing for a virulent strain of flu this winter when challenged by Piers Morgan.morstar said:
Did that happen on here?shortfall said:Following the Brexit vote it was sickening to see and hear people wishing death on the older generations who were seen to be to blame for the Leave vote. Roll on a few short months and all these @rseholes are suddenly rowing back now they think their parents and grandparents might die from Covid19.
There was a comment about wishing somebody dead in relation to Brexit but it didn’t fit the above.
Unless they’re the same people, it’s a bit irrelevant really. Just confirms some people are pretty nasty.0 -
I certainly remember such comments and I remember calling people out on it.
There were also numerous comments hoping for a harsh winter to kill off the elderly.1 -

Were they? Were you one of them, I honestly can't remember if you were or not.rick_chasey said:

But would probably explain why you're in recruitment rather than on the telly.
Go on then, give us all a laugh with your renowned sense of humour. Give us a gag about Pross' family loss.0 -
Meh, she'd have had a chuckle about it to be fair (and was a rabid remainer anyway!).0

I think everyone recognises, indeed the poster who brought it up recognises, that when a harsh winter was brought up it was in jest since, if it wasn’t, the same people who said it would be pleased about corona and they plainly aren’t.ballysmate said:

It’s just another one side taking offence to another in the culture wars, and if you are *actually* offended by it you ought to strap on a pair.0 -
TBH, if it did happen it wasn’t me. I always said it was flawed logic anyway. If you assume people shift to a certain mindset as they age, then as they are dying, they are being replaced by new people with the same mindset. More in fact.
I am however hoping my parents do survive with 0 hypocrisy.
But we do need to be careful to distinguish between black humour and offensive views.0 -
Not offended at all either on my own or either someone else's behalf. I leave that to you SJWs. I have said and laughed at stuff that no doubt others would have the vapours over.
The point with the stuff said in the Brexit thread is that it was said by people painting the Leave voters as universally nasty, hence my calling them out on it because in some cases it was certainly not clearly in jest.

I don’t think anyone called Brexiters universally nasty, nor has anyone made out that bring nasty is exclusive to Brexiters.
I think Brexit has unleashed some nasty stuff on the far right but that doesn’t bother you too much.0 -
There's some extreme social distancing going on by posters on this forum since Shortfall called out certain members of the LMS brigade1

I’m glad you’re illustrating my point that you don’t really know what words mean.coopster_the_1st said:There's some extreme social distancing going on by posters on this forum since Shortfall called out certain members of the LMS brigade

Nasty stuff is nasty stuff wherever it's source. I find it equally odious wherever it eminates.rick_chasey said:I don’t think anyone called Brexiters universally nasty, nor has anyone made out that bring nasty is exclusive to Brexiters.

You specifically did wish people dead with regard to Brexit thread. A la shortfall, I am not going to bother trawling for the post but you have no high ground here.coopster_the_1st said:There's some extreme social distancing going on by posters on this forum since Shortfall called out certain members of the LMS brigade

No problem at all with dark humour. Darker is often funnier. After every disaster dark jokes emerge very quickly and are usually very funny.morstar said:TBH, if it did happen it wasn’t me. I’d agree. I am sure we all get exasperated with views we find frustrating. I do. But it doesn’t excuse deliberate offence.ballysmate said:

I think it is more that their mindset stays the same and society changes around them. I really do not think i will become racist and or xenophobic just because I get older. However I think the whole trans and 57 different genders is a crock of sh1te, to the yoof this makes me a bigoted dinosaur who does not get it.morstar said:TBH, if it did happen it wasn’t me. I think elders move towards a more simplistic view that fits their own comprehension whilst simultaneously the world typically moves in the opposite direction (in western democracies at least).
Although this is opinion based on no firm foundations. I do think the Brexit old age thing was too simplistic though.
Maybe we should have thread on subject.0 -
I too (or should that be #me too) regard it to be self evident as a crock of sh1te, but I know I am a bigot because the resident SJW tells me so.surrey_commuter said:

With reference to the weeks feeling like months when looking back, anybody remember Rick’s rumour that Boris had been caught playing away and Carrie had given him a black eye.
That disappearance was Feb 15-27th.

The idea that a 2nd Brexit vote would reverse the decision due to the deaths of a proportion of elder leave voters and their replacement by remain voting teenagers.surrey_commuter said:

FWIW, the current death toll of the Corona virus in the UK is 0.00158% of the population. (assuming a population of 66m).
I doubt that would change any vote unless it affected a member of the Stoneybridge Community Council.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

Thankfully, we had seen the rise in the spread in Italy before CV19 started kicking in in the UK and that means we did this lockdown waaay before exponential spread. Hopefully, that will 'flatten the curve' out and save quite a few more lives.
Currently, there are 661,000 people reported to have CV19 globally. Deaths: 30671.
Italy has recorded 92000 cases and 10.000 deaths.
The deaths make up 0.018% of Italy's population.
The current global death rate is 4 per million.
Italy: 166 per million.

Unless we suffer disproportionately more deaths by head of population than China and for longer, what is your presumption for what the exponential rise will be?
The Spanish flu at the end of WW1 however...
