Shall I ask him? We're Twitter friends now.

I'm going for green, we haven't seen the green ones in a while (granted I missed today's coverage).

I'm actually a teensie bit jealous.

Have we had mustard yet? If not then I'll go for that.

Richie said he's looking to take more time on the people behind him on tonight's ITV highlights post stage warm-down interview. Sounds like he's riding to defend second. Shame. But understandable given the rubble of his and the team's season.

Then again, he might be bluffing.

Typical. I organise the introduction, and I bet I'm not even invited to the wedding. (Evening do at best - which frankly is all I want)

Red. It has to be red. Now he knows he has fans he can get more free trousers.

To be honest, I've got the day off tomorrow and I've had a bit of wine so I'm not sure my PTP pick will be that good. And don't call me Richie.

Might be neither - to put time into them he's going to have to be with the front group, and if he's up there then he's well placed to take advantage of any weakness from Nibali.

The gradients on the climb to Chamrousse are not extraordinary. After a drag up to Uriage it is a bit steep for a few km as the road traverses across the hillside then it is typical well graded ski resort road with switchbacks. The back road from Sechelienne is insanely steep in places and would have been something more Giroesque for the riders to tackle; shame they didn't use it. It is a long climb to Chamrousse, 250 m. in Grenoble, 1800m at the ski resort.

Well said, I always think the same, it's as if people haven't seen a woman before and any old reason to post a photo of a pretty girl is greeted with air-headed objectification. I couldn't give a flying sh1t who the rider's girlfriends are, if one has said something relevant to the race that's been quoted then fine, post that. It's just a bit sad and laddish.

Oh, definitely more x's though all threads need more x's!

I know you're right. and I feel bad about that.

Jenny Powell is not going to be reading the thread for that very reason.

Agree as well (xxx) I really enjoy the local info (but only BEFORE the racing starts) but gratuitous pics aren't needed.

Anyway, anyone know what the descent into Grenoble is like? I seem to remember everything north of the city being pretty steep in a "looming above everything" kind of way.

Can't really see Nibali losing any time, unless he fades towards the end of the final climb. Be interesting to see which of the remaining climbers are ready to play. Bardet? Pinot?

On the subject of local specialities, the kebab shops of Grenoble all seem to offer something I've not seen elsewhere - "Taco Kebab". A sort of cross between a panini and a kebab, in a square-ish brick thing. Like this:

Not sure the cat 1 suits Porte, it has gradients all over the place.

I like climbs that start off hard as it takes out the team mates early. Cannot believe Contador wont be there to take the win and at least a minute into Nibali.

Two thirds of this tour booked before any significant altitude test for the w/kg monkeys. No TT yet either. So far so good with regards to the racing. The best racer on all terrains so far is comfortably in front, and 'classics' riders like Sagan & Martin feature more than I can remember in recent years.

Hopefully this will encourage an attempt to balance future parcours between power/weight GC specialists and all-round riders with perhaps more 'imaginative' racing brains.

The most likely case today is that Nibali slips out of his sedan chair for a solo MTF victory unless somebody can incite a storm in Porte et al.

    Agree with all that.

Nailed on for the break today. I don't see too much action, expect a fairly big group to come into the last few k together behind the remains of the break. Probably more of an attempt on the Izoard tomorrow but not sure how conducive the descent on the South side is to staying away - never done it but meant to be fast which typically means fairly open.

Well he's not. I think Tichie Richie is going to take 47 seconds of Nibs here. :?

I have asked this before I think but can't recall - why is Nairo Q not here? :?

Regarding Nairo, I suspect to give him a chance of a big GT win, and to give Valverde a final shot at this one.

Are you serious ? It looks like some dog vomit wrapped up in a bit of cardboard. My abiding memory of Grenoble cuisine was of getting back there on the Sunday evening after the Marmotte and for some obscure reason all the restaurants seemed to be shut and the only thing I could find was a Buffalo Grill. I have to say it probably goes down as one of the worst meals of my life. My body was craving carbs and there I was in a restaurant devoted to dishing up manky steaks

Doing giro-vuelta as pitu.valv wanted this one to be all about him.

Assuming the deal is that he steps aside for next year, and making allowances for the fact I can't stand him, I reckon it's fair enough. He's been with the team for donkeys and a professional sport is often lacking in that sorry of loyalty.

Also means the vuelta might actually be competitive ;)

That's a peach of a climb. Today, I see Purito looking to add to his points tally, but at the end of the stage, I can't see anyone taking time from Nibali, but Valverde will be right behind him. That said, I'd like to see a breakaway rider going all the way.

  • As yesterday, the best of the wine is to be had at the start of the stage. The route crosses the Rhône at the small town of Chavanay which is at the southern end of the Condrieu region, fantastic white wine made from the Viognier grape with price tags to match. This is also part of the St Joseph area where some excellent Syrah based wines are made without quite the price tag of the more illustrious wines of the Cote Rôtie to the north although there is some fairly ordinary stuff as well...
    IMG_1692.jpg

After the descent of the Col de Palaquit the route passes through the bottom end of the Coteaux du Grésivaudan , an Indication Géographique Protégée (IGP - what used to be known as Vin de Pays). An undistinguished region producing fairly average wines from a range of grapes including, Gamay, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as the less well known Joubertin, Mondeuse, Jacquère and Verdesse.
