Commercially yes. But it's a team berth that could go to a young rider, or at least one capable of competing in a GT. Kennaugh etc could take care of ToB, ToC etc.
Kennaugh - I really like the guy but he'd still be well beaten by Wiggo on any parcours you could put together.

Maybe Wiggo should ride a few races then?
But he can't because the fragile ego'd Kenyan is picking.

It just feels a bit like he's given up - yes I know they don't hand out places on the team pursuit squad in cereal packets but at the same time TdF winners generally keep coming back until the world knows they are past it - they don't give up 9 months later after one poor Giro.

Do you mean it feels like he's given up because he's not prepared to go to another team and race the Tour next year as a leader trying to win it? At first I thought you meant his absence from this year's and last year's Tour was because he has 'given up', which is obviously not the case.

There was something going round about Darth Brailsford wanting to develop a French tour winner.

Brailsford is on record as being a big Pinot fan, and Imlach seemed pretty certain about his info, so I'm guessing it's true.

If so, it'll be interesting to see where he fits in. Has he accepted a year or two in the Sky train with the hopes of it supporting him at the end his sacrifice? It would be a shame if he's not contesting the Tour, but looking through the other teams it's hard to pick a landing spot that results in a good situation for him.

He'd either end in a train (Saxo, Movistar, Astana, Sky), unsupported on a sprint team (Giant), on a team with a similar level contender/future contender, (Garmin, BMC, AG2R, Europcar, Orica, Lampre), or some mix of both (OPQS, Lotto). It basically leaves Trek, Katusha, and FDJ.

If Wiggins re-signing for Sky prevents a talented young rider from signing for them then he is almost certainly doing that rider a favour given Sky's track record with young talent.

It's reassuringly difficult, it seems, to mass-produce thoroughbreds. Even Froome came as surprise - which is not a criticism, more support for the notion that winners ride on much more than numbers.

Whether Froome makes the Vuelta or not, I hope Wiggo rides to prepare for the Worlds. Now they've both won and missed a Tour, it's time to get real and race some bikes, rather than chase headlines.

I saw that. Wonder who'll be riding them? I had initially thought Garmin, but if the Cannondale merger goes ahead then that won't happen.

I think one UK channel suggested on air yesterday that Pinot would join Sky in 2015. I've made some enquiries & it's safe to rule it out.

He's got another year on his contract. I can see them being interested after that, as a replacement for Froome when he inevitably asks for stupid money at the end of his current contract (last year 2016)

The mighty Cheng-ster to replace Froome or Wiggins? He will pull the Sky train to victory.

His agent has just said that's not true. They did talk to Vino but decided to sign with another team.

Sagan and Oleg should get on pretty well. I really think there is little top class guidance and direction at Cannondale now. When Sagan goes to Tinky, trains differently, loses a few kg and has Riis as his DS he is going to be absolutely unstoppable.

@friebos: @ProCyclingBiz I don't even think team is that weak. Cannondale DS's ask for help every day & get none, not even one rider from other teams.

Stefan Küng to BMC from the development team.

Dylan Theuns joins him on a three year contract.

Teuns won a stage of the Tour de Bretagne on the way to a runner-up finish overall. He was second in the Under 23 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège in April and second in the elite version of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in July. Last year, the 22-year-old Belgian was a stage winner at Triptyque Ardennaise and finished third in the Under 23 edition of Ronde de l'Isard d'Ariège.

Kung has only just gone and won the European TT AND RR titles!

Could possibly be the future lifeline for Belkin. Given use of the term 'funding' as well as providing bikes.

Either that or I'd say it's one of the wildcard teams - possibly IAM, NetApp or Cofidis.

Wouldnt be surprised to see Tony Martin leave OPQS. Apparently he wasn't so happy with all the support put behind Cavendish and is realising that he could do well in GC in the future if he has a team fully around him.

“The TDS has shown me that I can keep up in the mountains. The fact that I lost the yellow had nothing to do with my condition, but was due to other circumstances,” Martin said.

“Tony wins as Eddy Merckx once did,” Lefevere praised the German rider.

“I would like to conclude the negotiations by the end of the Tour,” he added, asked about Martin’s contract extension.

In the same time, German rider’s agent Jörg Werner indicated that Martin received several offers from different directions, all worth being considered before making the final decision.

Tony Martin is close to extending with Omega Pharma-QuickStep for another two years. “We just need to exchange commas and full stops,” Martin’s agent Jörg Werner told Het Nieuwsblad.

I suspect he got a hefty pay increase.
