    I spent 20 years working in and running laboratories and never ever came across one of these. One sat behind the bar in our local for years with us all trying to guess what it was until I accidentally came across one in a laboratory supply catalogue

    Looks like a large coil which can be spun, and there are 'brushes' to make connections to the windings.

    Do you spin it and look for the current generated using the earth's magnetic field as the magnet?

    Nothing yet, apart from correctly recognising a "blade" at one end. It isn't that sharp by the way, and doesn't need to be.
