    Right, I actually think you intrepid sods will get this pretty quickly! Apologies it's a collection of objects - rather than an object - but I couldn't find photos of the individual parts.

    Correct. A Surelock points machine (this one would be located in the 6ft by the looks) which is driven by an electric motor (the blue bit). So it's not operated by cable, but could well be electro-mechanical i.e. operated by a lever frame with electrical contacts.
