Is it related to beekeeping? Hive maintenance, honey collecting?

I think this is as close as we need to get.

It's a 'hive tool'. The bees like to glue everything together inside the hive with a stuff call propolis. This makes the frames very difficult to get out. So you hook that curved end under a frame and use the tool as a lever to lift it out.

    Like this

The hand moves right to left, and the frame pops up. Anything which passes over the top of the hive makes the bees umpty, so I have one in each hand to keep the disturbance to a minimum

Ok. We'll go from a low-tech piece of metal to a high-tech piece of metal.
For size, it's sitting by a sheet of A4 paper.

Does the red end vibrate, and not in a sexual innuendo type of way?

    It's a light sabre,

it's set to the Empire version of "F - OFF" instead of stun or kill.

No vibration, not related to Star Wars.

Are the two plastic caps covering an inlet and outlet port for fluid? Possibly for hydraulic use?

No, the black bit is solid rubber on this one.

The increasing diameter of the shaft with an O ring at each step suggest that it is a pressure regulator of some description. Or that they act as a valve, based on position, for changing fluid volumes?

It works with hydraulics but not by them, if that makes sense?
Never heard of a fluidic switch, but I don't think it's that.
The changing diameter separates the 2 operating sections.

No, just painted. The colour is to help it be seen.

So if visibility is important, is it part of an outdoor piece of plant rather than in a factory? IS the red bit a handle for removing it for servicing?

Is the red handle actually some sort of device for adjustment?

Yes, used outdoors in a low-visibility environment. And the red bit is a handle for picking it up, using it, and putting it down. It doesn't adjust anything.

Is it used in oil exploration / extraction?

I think it's a High Flow Stabber. The high vis handle is for visibility under water, right?

Correct, although this one is not high-flow, but for precommisioning operations. We call them hot stabs, basically a subsea hydraulic connector. The red fishtail handle is for the ROV to grab and insert the tapered end into a receptacle on a valve, then the hydraulics can operate the valve.
    Over to you.
