First time in 4 decades can be interpreted different ways. No win in 90s, 00s, 10s and this was the first of the 20s.pinno said:M-SR
Hatch [Pogacar] "...he's got two... three bike lengths..."
What race are you watching Hatch?
"The first time in 4 decades that a Dutchman has won..."
No, 34 years. That's 6 years short of 4 decades.
Never mind Kirby, this guy is a w@nker.
He might get things wrong and be guilty of hyperbole but he is vastly more knowledgeable and a better commentator than Kirby (I know that could be damning with faint praise!).5 -
Deal for you: if you take all of my forced listening to Wittermouth then I'll have all of your Hatch. Unfortunately seems, on the Fire stick app anyway, there's not always the option to change audio feed to ambient, French, Dutch, anything at all really.pinno said:I'll take Kirby's wittering over Hatch's wholly ludicrous over pronunciation of proper nouns and his "...we'll be remembering this in years to come [yeah, the stage where you really over did it]... this will go down in the history books...[yes, I will remember the stage. I won't remember who won but i'll remember this was the stage where you went silly]..."

Calling Hatch that is way OTT imho. I think all of the main commentators (by that I exclude the exclude the sidemen/women like Kelly, Blythe etc), tend to exaggerate by varying degrees what’s happening for dramatic effect. To compare Kirby with Hatch my perception is that Kirby has watched racing for years yet far too often that fails to feed into worthwhile analysis whilst Hatch IS able to give a far better evaluation of a race and engages with his co-commentator more usefully.pinno said:M-SR

However Carlton might get excited about roundabouts but Rob seems get excited over someone get blown out the back of the bunch with a name he can roll around his tongue. Since they’ve paired Robbie Mckewn with Carlton, I think you’ve got a working partnership.1

This ^ I agree with.webboo said:However Carlton might get excited about roundabouts but Rob seems get excited over someone get blown out the back of the bunch with a name he can roll around his tongue. Since they’ve paired Robbie Mckewn with Carlton, I think you’ve got a working partnership.
Hatch spoils it completely for me.
It's rarely 'epic'. Cycle racing rarely has moments that can be described with such hyperbole.
Epic was Lizzie's win in P-R, epic was Andy Hampsten in the snow in the Giro, LeMond's win on the Champs Elysée's in '89, epic was the fascinating battle between Museeuw and Tchmil in P-R, Gilbert's World's win in Valkenburg, Indurain cracking as Riis attacks, Cancellara pedaling away from Boonen on the Muur, Schleck going solo up the Galibier, Froome going solo stage 19 in the Giro etc etc
I've watched cycling since the mid eighties and I am sorry and I love pro racing but the stand out moments are few.
I'm too long in the tooth to be 'sold' the idea that something is worth all that OTT nonsense. No commentary is going to make something 'epic' that plainly isn't.seanoconn - gruagach craic!1 -
I’ll sacrifice a bit of hyperbole to avoid inane white noise and to gain some kind of knowledgeable commentary any day.2

Do you not think that is a lame argument?Pross said:I’ll sacrifice a bit of hyperbole to avoid inane white noise and to gain some kind of knowledgeable commentary any day.
That's Stevo's argument for supporting the Tory party.
Judge Hatch by his own merit, not by what the (perceived) alternative is.
Cycling is huge at the moment. I recall the doldrums through the 90's and post Armstrong. Eurosport/GCN should really have better options. There are no economic reasons for both leads to be less than average.seanoconn - gruagach craic!1 -
They are both terrible in their own way.PTP Champion 2019, 2022 & 20231

What's with Hatch's obsessive references to nationality anyway?
'A win for Holland...'
No, a win for MvdP who rides for a team made up of individuals from all over.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
That's a brilliant nickname: I think he should own it.pinno said:Judge Hatch

Last Dutch win was Hennie Kuiper in 1985, which is 38 years ago. Last Dutch podium, which Hatch definitely mentioned at some point, was 34 years ago; Frans Maassen behind Fignon in 1989.1

I recon rob was asked to amp it up ala Carlton as he’s geen given more consistent gigs since he started doing it.
Anyone who gets annoyed with attempting correct pronunciation is just a bit ignorant of languages.4 -
I wonder how he pronounces BMW.1

I am not 'ignorant of languages' Mr condescending cosmopolitan Rick.
I have never heard such over-pronunciation in all my travels far and wide. I also went to an international school.seanoconn - gruagach craic!1 -
He’s pretty much the only English speaking commentator who doesn’t mangle Dutch names beyond comprehension.pinno said:

I read your initial comment that you felt Hatch was even worse than Kirby. Hatch is generally decent, the overly correct pronunciation is a bit Marmite and his hyperbole plus repeating his lines has became increasingly annoying, has become increasingly annoying but overall he’s well prepared, professional and does a good job. I don’t think he’s a bad commentator, he’s a good commentator who has developed some annoying habits. Kirby on the other hand is just terrible at everything with no redeeming qualities.pinno said:

The new generation that have come through GCN are an improvement on the old-guard Eurosport bunch though.5 -
The one time I find Kirby acceptable is when he is paired with Joanne Rowsell. She does a great job in keeping him in check and and under some sort of control.... plus correcting his many errors.
Rob Hatch has just become unnecessarily annoying. He could be pretty decent but isn't. Saying he is perhaps betterr than Kirby is no great recommendation. If his job is to be a commentator then he needs to get better.“You may think that; I couldn’t possibly comment!”

Agree with the Jo Rowsell 'guidance' effects 😉
Just watched TheMove podcast on MSR on UTub (Armstrong, Hincapie, Bruyneel and JB Hager) during which they had a bit where they all agreed that Robbie McEwen is good. Unlike...0 -

Hatch clearly speaks a few languages and gets the pronounciation right in those genrally. However he things he can speak a load more and really screws up those names.
And he really doesn't need to repeat himself.

Let’s be honest, it’s a shame the best commentator turned out to be a nonce.
Are we not skirting around that issue any more? It's remarkable how the cycling media who think they have to call cyclists to account brushed Harmon under the carpet. See also Walsh and Kimmage's defence of Tom Humphries.Twitter: @RichN951 -
