    He's trolling us

He did make one comment then added something like 'I know it's not to everyone's taste' which suggested he's aware of the criticisms / his perceived faults.

I liked Rob H and Adam B today, I said I liked... 😉 Easy listening, and both of them quite able and willing to correct any errors such as misidentification. Wittermouth just sets my teeth on edge.

This may be just me but I wish Jose Been would Anglicise her pronunciation of some names a little bit - teams and races as well as riders. Given it's an English language commentary after all.

I'm thinking of subscribing to GCN to watch the races Live. I live in France, would I receive it with French commentary by default? Or could I tweek it to English? Anyone in the same position that can answer this?
    Thanks.

The only one that really tends to annoy me these days is Jez Cox. Mainly because he keeps apologising for everything and anything every 5 minutes. Especially when talking about British riders.

I'm going out on a limb and assuming the Dutch/ Belgian/Etc commentary teams don't do too much apologising for their riders. Or would I be wrong?

    Dunno but try Eurosport.

CAN I CHANGE THE COMMENTARY LANGUAGE?
Yes, commentary languages can be changed on the playback console for most sports events.

On the video player, a drop down will give you a selection of languages to choose from. By default, videos will play in the native language of your country, unless you already changed your preferred commentary language.

NOTE: Not all videos will have commentaries available in the full selection of languages. If a language is not available, the video will default to ambient sound.

That's going to send really mixed messages to Mr R Hatch.

You can usually change the in race commentary. The live pre- and post race shows are in English only.

  • Enough of this cretin. Just watching Flanders and they go through Bjorg Lambrecht’s town.

Carlton has no idea. Just says they have gone through the town of the junior world champion.

1- he clearly had no idea who Lambrecht was
2- he clearly had no idea he never won that race

he also has no idea that in part he is broadcasting to people who have English as a second language. Yet he still uses British idioms.

    Enough. Please.

As someone mentioned before, this season’s tick for him is sticking ‘let’ on the end of everything. Twatlet.

We need to persuade Flanders Classic to give the English world feed commentary gig to someone else.

  • Noticeable by their absence in the best race of the season and the one where rider identification and tactical analysis are most needed?

They like him for filling in the spaces for boring (stage) races?

He is probably just a legacy hire that has a long contract and people tend to want to avoid the confrontation of firing people (who may be pleasant enough to work with) who have a long history with the company. That is my only explanation of why he still has the job.

    He's cheap too.
  • Caught up with the final stage of Itzulia yesterday. Carlton waffling on with his imagined conversations between riders, then chuckling to himself.

How the hell is that ‘commentary’?

Plenty of people seem to love it, or have no issue with it.

I agree though, your guess is as good as mine.

You get better and faster identification of riders from procyclingstats so I just turn the sound off.

If I want to imagine what he's saying, I'll just read the entire start list and say "maybe it's a day for" before every name.

I suspect the contract is with Eurosport \ GNC so not anything to do with Flanders Classics and they sold the rights

You misunderstood. Rob Hatch doesn't do Flanders commentary for Eurosport/GCN as he's busy providing the English language feed for Flanders Classics, hence why we get Kirby.

Thread on social media comments re cycling commentators

    Some contributions from this parish

You don't need to be on twitter to click through and read the thread

Worth thinking about how the people involve may feel about being told they're shit at their job.

Which may or may not be fair comment, but I'm not sure how I'd handle a crowd around my desk on Monday morning telling me they hate how I do the weekly accounts

I think Dan's aware by now that he meant 'soul'

As the contributor that you are mentioning I would point out to people that my contribution was to say there are up and coming commentators who should be given a go at bigger races. It's clear that someone like Jez Cox is better than some at the actual racing parts. I also mentioned that Hatch has moved towards hyperbole, which is constructive criticism I feel.
But with commentary in many sports (and in fact a lot of the media), once you have your feet under the table you're hard to dislodge regardless of performance. And there are few available tables. If the sport of cycling ran like this, Johan Museeuw would still be leading Quick Step.
