What's with Tao Geoghegan Hart - I mean, is he clinically depressed? Interviews are voluntary so I don't know why he's doing them.

Not sure publically speculating on people’s mental health is a good thing

It's not, but it's OK pointing out that this is the bleakest interview that most of us have seen and wanting to give him a hug and say it's OK Tao. We really don't know what might be happening in rider's lives outside cycling. The question is why did he do the interview? Was he pressured?
That was my thought. he seemed to be exhausted. Plus, he shipped time yesterday which means things are probably not good.
I disagree though, IF he has some mental issues then audience would be sympathetic. That's an IF.

Cross fingers he'll recharge today. It has been a brutal tour so far.
Strangely, this is his only GT this year.

He shipped time yesterday because he crashed on the descent before the final climb and never got back to the front group. It had nothing to do with his morale.

They just showed bits of footage from yesterday’s stage which included Rodriguez congratulating Carapaz. Carlton: “So nice to see rivals congratulating each other”. FFS I know they had different jerseys on but surely the big ‘Ineos’ in them should have been a clue!

I think Dan Lloyd's tweet was more to do with the truck loads of online abuse that gets thrown at Orla Chennaoui.
It was exactly what I said, I look for feedback everywhere....

I find it really interesting, so don't worry about me lurking.

I think they use iPhones or tablets as a way to have the facts at their fingertips. If it was the same segment I saw you could hear Orla checking something about levels - rather than texting she was probably swotting up on the main themes they'd agreed to talk about afterwards. I quite appreciated the insight into how they work - everyone else going nuts and Orla making sure that she's fully equipped to play ringmistress. She's clearly a fan, but she's also an absolute pro, and it gets the best out of everyone else around her.

I'm not buying that. I haven't seen the clip, but not watching a stage finish is a bit odd if you are about to talk about it. Surely you would need, if not want, to know who won. I can't image Gary Lineker not watching a penalty shoot out.
In the sequence I'm on about - and there's no guarantee it's the same one as Blazing was, nor is there any guarantee that the way it's been cut reflects what was going on in chronological order - she's there checking stuff whilst everyone gets excited, then is shown saying "oh my god!" whilst stood up to watch the screen. I don't think any of us could know what correlates to any of those moments, nor use it to draw the conclusion that she didn't watch the final sprint.

However there was definitely some point where Robbie and Adam looked like they'd overdone the e numbers and Orla was concentrating on getting ready for the show. That's kind of interesting to notice, and part of all their strengths.
In that set, there are TVs on both sides, so Orla looking in a different direction to the rest of us doesn't mean she's not watching the race.

Purely on the subject of commentators, have watched the last couple of CX races, and Helen Wyman is imo superb.

Calm delivery, varying intonation, clearly knowledge and a passion for the sport, and a bit of humour sprinkled in, perfect blend.

I hope they make more of her skills, and potentially she might make her way onto some road racing commentary.

My biggest concern with the GCN/Eurosport/Discovery coverage is when the audio is disjointed/inoperative.
My second concern is Marty reading out the positions from 1-20 or more when 1: they’re being shown to us on the screen 2: something is happening on screen that’s more important(always).
I have other concerns, mainly to do with a certain commentator but Marty really knackers cx for me.

    Welcome @lloyddaniel.
Why so much online abuse at Orla? Is that 'normal' for anyone in the spotlight? You'll have to forgive me but I don't spend much time on social media.
What is (or are there) the general themes of the abuse?

The consensus in here (I think) regarding Orla is positive. I personally think she's excellent at keeping things moving, she adds a human touch and she is a breath of fresh air.

It may be something outside of GCNs control, but thought I'd mention it

The biggest bugbear I have with Eurosport coverage is their 1 hour highlights programme, which usually consists of random bits of footage thrown together

Now, I know nothing about TV production or the GCN/Eurosport set up, but it would be great to see races given a proper highlights show, with the story of the race told.

  • I was under the impression previously that this didn't include the Eurosport element. I looked into it when E3 was on last year and the TV coverage was so much shorter than GCN coverage

Signed up for the Discovery +

You need to set up an account - but it's 0 cost

I couldn't watch the CX race today though, I assume you need a GCN account to unlock it?

1'30" into my watching of the 2023 Road season and Carlton is fretting about 90degree turns.

    Example

The highlights package for the Stage 1 one of the UAE went to the ad break with 47km to go, came back with 27km to go and echelons all over the road

Its just the live coverage with 20k chopped out

Watchin highlights never works for cycling. I find the best way to watch a stage as a VOD is to start at the beginning and skip forward. You don't miss the story of the race that way.

Media covering cycling in most cases do such a poor job, that it's just amazing they aren't watching cycling for the first time. There are only very few exceptions unfortunately.

A good highlights package would do the same thing. Watch the race and add timestamps to the decisive moments. Cut the moments in-between timestamps.
    PTP Champion 2019, 2022 & 2023
  • BT Sport app is good for putting timestamps on live coverage to jump back to

Hopefully with a link between Discovery and BT they can add this to Discovery + and GCN+

This overhead shot was on the live coverage with 28.3km to go (the live coverage was showing the peloton closing in when it actually happened) - missing that out is proof there is no science to it beyond what will fit in the slot.

Watching my first racing of the year after getting my free Discovery + account sorted. The first thing I got was Kirby blathering on about camel whispering and it has gone gradually more downhill since. I was hoping he was going to get phased out and replaced with the GCN lot over this season, no such luck.

If you're watching on Discovery + you can change the language of commentary. The French guys were very informative about the bordures towards the end of the stage

Today we had roundabouts, and the oil polluting wells story, heard that at least once before.

And watching the slow mo finish commenting about Groenewegen 'jinking' around some debris on the ground during the sprint, when he maintained a straight line past the debris, and it was evidently Gaviria that had to do the jinking :D

  • Brian Smith doing a good job of keeping him in his box, today.
I know there's not a lot going on, but you can't just keep repeating the names of half the peloton, over and over and over.
He has done this so many times in the last hour that he forgot he had asked Brian who he thought would win this stage.
    Brian's reply was perfect.

Hatch [Pogacar] "...he's got two... three bike lengths..."

What race are you watching Hatch?

"The first time in 4 decades that a Dutchman has won..."

No, 34 years. That's 6 years short of 4 decades.

Never mind Kirby, this guy is a w@nker.

I'll take Kirby's wittering over Hatch's wholly ludicrous over pronunciation of proper nouns and his "...we'll be remembering this in years to come [yeah, the stage where you really over did it]... this will go down in the history books...[yes, I will remember the stage. I won't remember who won but i'll remember this was the stage where you went silly]..."
