Who is Bob Dylan riding for?DeVlaeminck said:Credit where its due great subtle Bob Dylan reference at 166k to go.
Actually listening to him now is why I think he's a bit unfairly criticised - for a quiet start like this he's a good commentator.
I wouldn't call this a quiet start. There's loads going on, it's just that information is sparse.
Which is kind of the point."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

I'm guessing Intermarche (Zimmermann). Having spent several days disagreeing with Roger, I agree with him now. He's good at filling time when not much is happening.Twitter: @RichN950 -

In that case, it's a pity that it's Hatch's turn to open up today.RichN95. said:blazing_saddles said:

ITV have full coverage of these next two mountain stages, so there's a bit more choice to be had."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
If you ever listen to baseball commentary it's a masterclass in chatting while nothing is happening, accurate knowledgeable description of what does happen, and injecting a level of excitement when something exciting happens.
There's also an innovation which I think, with the right rider, would be an interesting addition
On some coverage a player has an earpiece/mic and is interviewed during the game.
Usually while on the bench waiting they're next turn at bat.
I could see this in the early hours of a stage, after the breaks goes, the commentary teams speak directly to a rider in the bunch.

A couple of times during this final climb they've zoomed in on the gearing Pogacar and Vingegaard are in and how they're changing. Kirby was wittering on about absolutely nothing interesting, relevant or useful and made no mention of what should be insightful for viewers.
Kelly interjected to offer some explanation first time but Kirby took over again and went off on an irrelevant tangent. He must be paid by the word.1 -
Haven't they done that before with Wiggins off the bike?tailwindhome said:If you ever listen to baseball commentary it's a masterclass in chatting while nothing is happening, accurate knowledgeable description of what does happen, and injecting a level of excitement when something exciting happens.

Noticed he made the same Dylan reference today - hopefully this isn't the start of a trend...[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

They interview players in Twenty20 cricket too. This is Shane Warne telling the commentators how he's going to get Brendon McCullum out, and then doing it (from around 0.55)

You can do that at the cricket except the beer probably won't be expensive craft beer, they do normally have a real ale stand though... Love a day at the cricket (or a T20 is about the same length as a baseball game).Jezyboy said:

Speaking of Wiggins where has he gone - did they mention why he's been replaced by Bertie - wondered if it was planned or something happened ?bobmcstuff said:

They did the same last year as well I think (possibly Bernie and Brad). I guess it's just to mix things up and was announced a few days in advance.DeVlaeminck said:

Not sure it really adds anything to the coverage really other than providing a sense of irony when CK moans about the amount of motorbikes then gets to announce going to speak to their person on one of those very bikes2 -

Yes, he had a couple of commitments which meant he couldn’t stay out in France. He’ll be back again in the GCN/Eurosport “Cube”.0

He's out of his comfort zone in the role they've given him. Knowledgeable guy but just drones on when left to cover longer periods.TheBigBean said:Am I the only one who finds Matt Rendell annoying?

Looks like he's doing the Vuelta.......oh marvellous.
Apart from that, I think the Eurosport/GCN coverage of cycling is evolving, and improving - and not before time. With WB/Discovery now owning them, there's no need for it to feel 'budget'.
However, I don't get the thinking behind the 'Cube' and studio based commentary. Why? What is wrong with presenting/ commentating from the venue, like ITV has been doing?
It made sense under Covid, but not anymore - just comes across as cutting costs. All Road/ Gravel: tbcWinter: tbcMTB: tbcRoad: tbc"Look at the time...." "he's fallen like an old lady on a cruise ship..."0 -
Unless every stage ended up with riders ambling over for a chat like yesterday, being on location doesn't really add anything and - as with Adam having to crawl over to a tiny monitor to see it in bright sunlight - adds challenges that can make the coverage worse. And you do have the reporting from the road itself with Bernie / Brad / Alberto etc.
I can't remember watching any ITV this year - did they do something amazing that can only be done at the race finish?3 -
I'm not sure moving venue would add anything - everyone watches the racing on a screen anyway other than Brad and Bertie on the motorbike. I think it comes across better than the ITV coverage which to me is a bit like a bunch of fans making a video blog - personal taste though - I've always preferred ES to ITV.
They do have Walker on the route and Eisel and Stephens do pieces too it's not all studio based.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
It's their highlights package is miles better than GCN's - I don't really understand why GCN doesn't put together a proper 1hr highlights package which includes the Breakaway or similar. Their long highlights is literally just ~30 minutes of race coverage.Lanterne_Rogue said:Unless every stage ended up with riders ambling over for a chat like yesterday, being on location doesn't really add anything and - as with Adam having to crawl over to a tiny monitor to see it in bright sunlight - adds challenges that can make the coverage worse. ITV have a lot more interviews etc. with riders and they have the magazine type features with Friebe etc., their coverage seems to be designed around the highlights package whereas GCN focuses on the live coverage more if that makes sense.
So if watching live I'd probably watch GCN for the pre- and post- race discussion (Kirby comms notwithstanding), plus full stage coverage, but the ITV highlights are a lot more complete (probably because they are a proper TV broadcast package).
