Click on the top bit of the tweet - did the same for me initially but worked when I did that

Off in a completely different direction to the actual topic at hand, with no real expertise or insight from any contributors?

Orla has almost lost her voice after that stage.
    Just sayin'.

(a pity that never seems to happen to Carlton Krankie)

I feel like CK has become an even greater parody of himself at this Tour, literally every sentence he utters is nonsensical, mostly not about cycling and followed by a chuckle. Also he is literally getting in the way of people like Robbie who want to talk about the race, but nooooo carlton has to elbow him out the way to unleash one of his tired expressions.

I've had today's stage on one screen whilst trying to work on the other today and his incessant, inane babbling is even more noticeable when you are trying to concentrate on other things.

For his first stint I switched to Dutch commentary and for his second, I filled in with S4c when ITV were ad breaking.
What a sad state of affairs, but as long as we pay the subscriptions, the powers that be at GCN/Discovery won't give a toss.
    That's why he's still employed.

There's one answer to that. I stopped paying the subscription because of him (amongst other reasons but he was the main one)

Yebbut. £19.99, get the timings right, or incessant ads for funeral plans and donkey sanctuaries. There's always the mute button.

He'd be far more bearable if he just kept quiet for a bit every now and again. He's surrounded by insightful analysts and former professionals, he's commentating on a sport that doesn't require second-by-second verbal observations like a football match on the radio.

Most of duration of most stages has more in common with televised test cricket in commentary terms. There's not much going on in between deliveries and most deliveries are non events. Silence isn't a bad thing, allow the audience some credit that they can enjoy the wonderful scenery and images for themselves every now and again. Kirby lets his mouth run off with him and when he runs out of words he goes "ooooohhhh", or "oh my goodness" which is his version of someone droning eeerrrrrrrrmmm in between each sentence in an interview. He just needs to cut his word volume down by 80% and he'd be tolerable.

A couple of Richie Benaud quotes on commentary - "My mantra is: put your brain into gear and if you can add to what's on the screen then do it, otherwise shut up."
"The key thing was to learn the value of economy with words and to never insult the viewer by telling them what they can already see."

With all the commentators and handovers between them I keep remembering David D doing hours and hours alone. "Chapeau or whatever they say in France"

Was showing a colleague a bit of the exciting Pog Rog Ving stage in the office as he’d missed it. I was using the sporza coverage, obviously.

He almost instantly said “Christ, they’re not excited by this, are they?”

Anglos expect commentators to rev you up.

They increasingly do it in Dutch coverage too.

kirby at it again today, and repeatedly.

Rowe at the front of the peloton, puts his hand on the jumbo rider to his right, clearly to look behind, but in a safe manner.

kirby decides this is Rowe telling the jumbo rider this that and the other, slow down, yadda yadda yadda :#

So embarrassing - he must have seen that same move happen a thousand times, but has failed to retain the information, or maybe he simply never knew?

I watched on ITV4 today. I don't rate Millar's input to be honest. "This is what they'll be looking to do blah blah" something completely different happens "you see, this is what I was saying". Plus I'm bankrupt now from helping all the people and animals that need my help NOW and making sure I've taken out life insurance / paid for my funeral

I only has him on for a busy sec but heard him wax lyrical about how sad it was that "Si Clarke" had had to leave the race for 5 minutes.

Oh and some other guy called...erm...Doglich..?.. had to as well...

Oh and btw ITV fans, Stella Unfiltered tastes of sweet FA. Really not sure what the point of it is.

I don't know if Carlton feels under pressure but he does seem to be trying to add more of his own analysis to his commentary - today he suggested Ineos had come to the front to set Tom Pidcock up for the sprint.

I actually quite like him when he sticks more to non cycling related chat and leaves room for the pundits to discuss the race but he probably does need to stay away from explaining the action.

He’s always punted half baked theories hasn’t he? I can judge my moods now by listening to his comms. If I can bear him I’m in a good mood, if I feel like throwing the iPad or tv across the room, I’m obviously not in such a good mood.

He’s not bad enough to make me want ad breaks about death and donkeys.

I've got a slightly different system. If I want to throw things around the room I know Carlton is commentating whereas if I don't I know he's not.

And the rest - it's short for anglophone in this context, and that includes the overly-exciteable American market.

I've noticed flicking through the various language options that quite a few of them seem like two fellas being mildly surprised by seeing someone they recognise on TV - "Oh, it's Froome", "Oh, yeah. Wonder what he's doing there?" - right up until the point one of "their" riders is in with a shout. That's very much not the style in any UK sports coverage except perhaps snooker, where the main job of the commentator is to do some maths so the viewer doesn't have to.

Credit where its due great subtle Bob Dylan reference at 166k to go.

Actually listening to him now is why I think he's a bit unfairly criticised - for a quiet start like this he's a good commentator.
