He is not very good. Can be worth watching if you need more than LR and HTRWW.

We had a classic Kirby moment today in Turkey.
Racing towards the final loop of the finishing circuit and a couple of lads had let off some pretty feeble flares.
Naturally this triggered our Carlton to go off on one.

Next instant there’s a big crash that blocked the road for half the peloton, which Kirby completely failed to notice.
No doubt he had smoke in his eyes.

Nico Roche is making a much better job of commentary than his father did. (I know I'm old )

He did much better today on stage 2, some real insights.

He was either nervous, or simply didn't have much to say on the opening TT, maybe not that surprising.
Thought he found himself being caught between two stools in the last few km yesterday - you could almost hear him thinking "they've got no chance, but that's not interesting for the viewer, but I don't want to be too forthright about them having no chance in case they somehow do it... oh heck..."

Agree with the insights though - it's really early in his career as co-comms and it usually takes a while for someone new to settle into it and find their own style. Roche is shaping up okay so far, and seems to have some of the David Millar keenness to talk about some of the aspects of racing that he finds especially interesting. That slightly geeky approach to racing (as opposed to the tech) is something that the Eurosport blend has perhaps missed a little.
Not for me - the itv commentary that is - I've not caught Nico on co-comms this year but I wasn't overly impressed with him with the bits he's done previously - agree it does take them a while to find their feet though.

He improved the further it went on in my opinion.

Several times on today’s big climb in Turkey, Kirby praised the ride of a local rider who was mixing it with Quintana and the main GC contenders, in the select group.

It was a chap by the name of Mustafer Sayar.

    Oh dear, Carlton.

If anyone is wondering what mr thread title is up to atm, he's on duty this week, for Hungary.

So, naturally his first words of commentary today were: "Welcome............to the Tour of Turkey,"

That is outstanding work. He made it to the sixth word without a mistake.

Last couple of days I have been in the office, catching up on the admin side of my business, which I hate. I have had the Giro on as a radio, only listening.
Adam Dan and Robbie are a joy to listen to and Hatch and Kelly are ok too. I think I would have lasted 2 minutes if Kirby had appeared before changing to a normal radio station.

Eurosport, please please keep him away :)

I'm missing the banter that they had last year at the Giro, not sure if it is purely because Blythe is hardly doing any commentary and just in the studio, or the addition of RM, or whether they have been instructed to make it a bit more professional.

I wonder if they had any complaints (probably not) though yesterday, I forget the context, but RM basically said he would call someone a word that began with the letter B, and ended with 'astard' :D

I always feel simmering tension between CK and Brian Smith.

The 6 stages of the 4 days of Dunkirk I felt a couple of times it would go full on.

Probably because Smithy knows Carlton is full of shit and knows literally nothing about a sport he is paid to watch all day.

When Eurosport announced their team on facebook there was no mention of CK. Imagine my disappointment when Rob hatch introduced the idiot this afternoon :(

I think he may have just reached his peak. Lovely tribute to Chris Anker Sorensen. Carlton says

What a complete lack of class. We already know he knows sweet FA about cycling, but this just shows his true character.

It wasn't actually that bad - he had no idea it was CAS but be honest I suspect most cycling fans didn't either.

He has since posted an apology on twitter.

I wonder if that will be the final straw for him. It already felt like he was being phased out under GCN / Discovery and this might give them the excuse to finally bin him.

I think every other professional commentator knew it was coming and were ready for it. It's not about recognising the portrait, it's about doing your homework and treating a memorial with respect.

How was he meant to be ready for it ? Unless there is some briefing he failed to attend or memo he couldn't be bothered to read?

He said in the commentary he looked in the notes (Jonno's notes?) and there was nothing there. Also as it panned across initially it was just the face so he was already talking about it before it became obvious it was in memory of someone.

    We worked it out tbf.
