On the Hatch note; he said in Omloop (IIRC) when some chasers were 30 seconds down "they're riding for their lives!".

Kirby's giggling at his own jokes is just about bearable but Hatch attempts to make everything epic just grates.
I do like McEwans' contribution and I quite like Dan and Adrian Blythe.
    Kelly has improved no end.

Not heard Adrian Blythe's commentary but Adam Blythe is very good (although the diamonds in the legs thing is getting tired now).
    Adam. My bad.

It looks like Rob Hatch is taking a break. His twitter account has gone silent too.

Not listened to McEwen much before today, but so far he seems to be the best commentator we have had.

He's getting into full flow now, Lloyd and McEwen not being given a chance to interupt

Presumably as he'd just been telling us it was raining when the dry roads suggested otherwise

Yes, he actually describes what's happening, and knows the course.

Could have sworn kirby said that hatch would be partaking, though I never heard him.

Rob Hatch did the race start to finish. With Magnus Backstedt on the world feed.

This 'world feed' is not available on GCN+/Eurosport/Discovery as far as you are aware?

Would be nice to have an alternative to ck.
Admittedly today his ramblings were less due to the regular input from lloyd and mckewen, so that was something.

I don't really understand the point of world feeds - no one ever seems to carry them...

They seem to exist only for lame highlight feeds. Lame being the operative word, because if they're too good, i.e. Cosmo Catalano & HTRWW, they get taken down!

I think we have it pretty good in the English speaking cycling world.
If you disagree, just watch the series of Belgian Ron Managers on the Ronde documentaries.

    What makes you say that?
It's all subjective isn't it. Personally Bean and Backstedt is the worst of both worlds - Bean is the only one who actually spoils the race for me.

Thought CK's personality worked well with his co-commentators today.

McEwen and Blythe are quality and Lloyd isn't far behind as a pundit but has the versatility to double up on commentary. Add in Kelly, Orla C, the ex triathlete chap, Bri Smithy and Wiggins and it's a decent team.

I rate Hatch higher than most on here seem to too. Bin off Bean and we could be getting back to the standard we had before Harmon ended his career.

Exactly, having two decent co-commentators seemed to keep Kirby in his box a bit more. He didn't get the long runs of verbal diarrhoea like when it is him and Kelly and he feels the need to fill every second. The bits he did get actually kind of worked.

I don't really mind Hatch. He does go a bit overboard with the "epic" stuff. And repeats himself (which isn't always a bad thing, but when you do it all the time...). But I prefer that to Kirby being factually incorrect every other line.

Everybody is missing the obvious with regard Kirby.
The weather was pretty benign and there wasn't a single roundabout or curve worth the name on the final 12km run in.

I'm surprised he didn't have a meltdown with that overtake by the UAE team car (think he was on comms at the time?) but it would have been justifiable for once as it was a ridiculous move.

Yeah, but I would have expected CK to have gone ballistic about it whereas there were a few comments along the lines of 'that was a bit sketchy'.

Agree, who actually takes the 'world feed'? I think we should be given the choice if we want it.

I dislike ck for many aspects of his commentary, but have always rated hatch really highly - I like his knowledge and enthusiasm/passion for the sport, which seems genuine to me.
His easy and effortless banter with whoever he co-commentates with is also nice on the ear.

I actually like him repeating stuff, maybe because I do exactly the same thing when I am watching a sporting event, be it cycling, F1, Tennis whatever :D

For me he only does it when something that he believes of note has happened, ie an attack, a crash, or someone being dropped from the favourites, and that I can and do relate to.

doesn't stop him being boring as though.

its the droney monotone voice, not the knowledge/experience.

listen to what he says rather than the accent. None of what he says is boring as it's backed up by real world knowledge. He may sometimes sound like a dour Irishman, but he does have a good sense of humour at times too.

He did much better today on stage 2, some real insights.

He was either nervous, or simply didn't have much to say on the opening TT, maybe not that surprising.

You could almost hear the terror when he was suddenly asked to do a simultaneous translation of one of the interviews. He did well though.

Thought he found himself being caught between two stools in the last few km yesterday - you could almost hear him thinking "they've got no chance, but that's not interesting for the viewer, but I don't want to be too forthright about them having no chance in case they somehow do it... oh heck..."

Agree with the insights though - it's really early in his career as co-comms and it usually takes a while for someone new to settle into it and find their own style. Roche is shaping up okay so far, and seems to have some of the David Millar keenness to talk about some of the aspects of racing that he finds especially interesting. That slightly geeky approach to racing (as opposed to the tech) is something that the Eurosport blend has perhaps missed a little.

What’s peoples opinion on Chris Horner on YouTube? He seems to offer interesting views but I’m getting a bit tired of him saying any tactic apart from his are knuckleheaded.
