Has he had a traumatic experience on a roundabout do you think? Definitely fixated on them (as Magnus would definitely say)1

I would quite like to tune into the Vuelta and watch some of these new brutal climbs. However, I literally cannot stomach more than 5 minutes of CK. From the sharp intakes of breath to the err err err errms that proceed his next monologue of absolute drivel, slightly racist little englander views and lack of race awareness.
I'm sure he is a nice guy but his work is not for me.4 -

He had a good time today repeating how FJ got on the radio to say he didn’t have the legs today and instruct his team mates to take the win for him.
Turns out he had a flat tyre.
To be fair he's hardly likely to notice FJ had a puncture in the midst of a hectic bunch leadout especially from the helicopter shot.0 -
And yet he thought it worth taking a guess that he knew what was going on.ibr17xvii said:carbonclem said:He had a good time today repeating how FJ got on the radio to say he didn’t have the legs today and instruct his team mates to take the win for him.

He was back to laughing at his own attempted puns again yesterday too.
He must hold some good photos.1 -

I've heard him lampoon many a national monument or source of local pride based on nothing more than "haha it sounds funny/different".stage_hunter said:

At the end today he was going on about Meintjes sitting on Martin's wheel rather than being a disruptor for Eiking when Martin attacked. I'm not quite sure what kind of disruption he expected but 5 minutes later it came back and he was saying what a good job Meintjes had done by just sitting on the wheel. Absolute fool1

Agreed. Which should give him some awareness that he doesn’t know what they are thinking or saying.ibr17xvii said:carbonclem said:He had a good time today repeating how FJ got on the radio to say he didn’t have the legs today and instruct his team mates to take the win for him.

You may like him, you may not, that's fine but racist? Really?

I've been called out for making similar suggestions before which was fair enough. Some of his comments are a bit off colour from time to time but racism is probably a bit strong - just feels very dated sometimes. You'd have to trawl back through loads of stage threads to find examples though.
Although he does very often make jokes out of people's names which might fly a bit closer to the wind if the peloton was less overwhelmingly white.2 -
He's very clearly a xenophobe. Whether that crosses over into racism or not, is arguable.0

That's not something that's ever been clear to me.andyp said:He's very clearly a xenophobe. Whether that crosses over into racism or not, is arguable.
I hear him quite a lot, and have never thought he might be xenophobic or racist.0 -
I'm not sure that's the case. I think Bob's assessment is more correct, it's like a 70s comedian taking the mick out of funny foreigners. I guess a lot comes down to where you draw the line defining racism or xenophobia though which is a debate that has been had in Cake Stop many times. It's certainly outdated and I'm surprised a European channel finds it acceptable.andyp said:He's very clearly a xenophobe. Whether that crosses over into racism or not, is arguable.

Random example from page 4 of this thread.Rick Chasey wrote:4) why on earth was Kirby discussing skin colours of Italians and English people when the leaders were starting the final gravel section? Why on earth was he discussing skin colours?
Later - Spanish people get fat when they get old
"Jokes" about Nibali filling people's boots with concrete because he's Sicilian.
Don't know that it counts as racism but it's certainly a bit odd/old fashioned. You can see how it could come across as xenophobic...

And that's why I said "slightly".....off colour is a better term maybe.bobmcstuff said:I've been called out for making similar suggestions before which was fair enough. Cancel Carlton: now there's a campaign worth investing in... 😉1
-
Carlton also spends a lot of time talking up the local areas, talking about the times he's spent in them etc etc.
He's far from a xenophobe. What he is is someone that likes to see the humour in things and sometimes that might be local customs, names, etc. If he's commentating on an English race he'd do exactly the same.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
Racism on a Carlton Kirby thread ,FFS these people get everywhere.0
-
Carlton sends me crazy a lot of the time but I don't see any indication he is rascist. I ride with French, Belgian, Dutch riders who take the p*ss out me and things British... and I return the compliment. Is that rascist. If it is I couldn't give a stuff.“You may think that; I couldn’t possibly comment!”

I’d agree with this. I’m no fan of his commentary but he’s no massive xenophobe or anything close. Just dated.DeVlaeminck said:Carlton also spends a lot of time talking up the local areas, talking about the times he's spent in them etc etc.

Well that's another GT done. I just hope he doesn't get the Paris Roubaix run in.1
-
Strangely I found him tolerable on Saturday when there was actually racing worth getting excited about.0
-
Nah, rider identification is a key part of that race so they don't trust him with it. I would imagine it will be Hatch, Maggy and then maybe Sean, Dan Lloyd and/or Blythe.abedfo88 said:Well that's another GT done. I just hope he doesn't get the Paris Roubaix run in.
Coverage will be all day so they will swap and change throughout1 -
Yeah well ehen he got the flanders run in this year I was literally aghast. Just isnt the same with the TV on mute.1
