the Hinault punch up doesn't seem necessary - I'd say from that the first Lemond one and the Mercx should definitely be in0

Most of this thread I know about but never would I have known where that picture came from.
However the photo of "Gino" giving "Fausto" a drink is one of my favourites.
Now all I need is a picture of Ferdie Kubler and Coppi. (or one that includes all three with Raphaël Géminiani)
I often ponder why there is never a picture of Erik Breukink when they show Andy Hampsten following him over the Passo di Gavia in that snowstorm.Organiser, National Championship 50 mile Time Trial 19720 -
May I add a couple of late ones where the event is largely remember because of the photographs.
Firstly - 1934. Rene Vietto sits on a wall having ridden back up the course (legal at the time) to give a wheel to his crashed team (and race) leader, Antoinin Magne. Rene Vietto had stood to inherit the lead himself. He's watching the race pass by in anguish waiting for the team car to arrive. Magne won the GC. Vietto was fifth. It's quite a famous photo.
Secondly. 1951. I'm sure Wim van Est must have been mentioned. But here he is again. The sight of him being lifted out of the ravine is a stunner, but for me the shot of his expression after being rescued is the one to include.
And I won;t be happy with any short list which doesn't include this

Lemond possibly in all the top 3 photos - quite a legacy!!0

Not easy to draw a line between great photo and great moment.
My top five, in chronological order would be:
Coppi & Bartali and the bottle (Carlo Martini)
Anquetil & Poulidor on Puy de Dome (Roger Krieger)
LeMond & Hinault on L'Alpe d'Huez (Graham Watson)
Hampsten on the Gavia (Sergio Penazzo)
Wiggins & Cavendish pass the Arc de Triomphe (the Getty version below)
There's a great Joel Saget shot of Schleck in yellow reflected in Contadors glasses, but I don't it truly shows an event.Twitter: @RichN950 -

Never seen this before:
Contador is the Greatest0 -
If we're still making a shortlist, the Lemond Roubaix changing room one deserves a sharper version.
As far as I know it's the only cycling photo to have won World Press Photo of the year (sports category). It gets my vote

Like the Lemond Roubaix photo, but think I prefer this...

There is a photo somewhere of Fignon at the end of the 1989 Tour where he finds out he has lost. His photo says it all here but the photo taken in the scrum is very good.

A shortlist cannot be comeplete unless it includes some serious bangers from the classics. There are loads of them. Preferably Cancellara or Boonen.
This one for when he was untouchable:
And this one when he was marked to death even though he was the strongest:
For Boonen I have always loved the one where Terpstra cannot hold his wheel. These are two examples but there is another simply fantastic shot which I can't find at the moment.
King of Flanders
This one I Iove:
This one is a classic.
If there are none of Contador then the shortlist is also useless. Need one of King Kelly as well.
Maybe this one:
For Contador I will have to think as there are too many to choose.
The photos from Evan's Giro win in 2010 are also going to remain solid. Have a good look through to remind yourself:

Best photo and one I would shortlist:
or this one (can't decide which is better)
This one posted by EightonEight is great, but I guess with no particular 'moment' it doesn't reach the top of the list:
Bartali and Coppi 1940 Giro

When doing the short list I got bored after page 10 or so of the thread.
If you have any Contador suggestions feel free to post. I'm vetoing any from the pistolero genre as it the cycling equivalent of the Paul McCartney thumbs up. I'll accept the 7 GT victory salute.
We seem short on Lance pics which doesn't seem right.
Also need suggestions in the 'Reflection in sunglasses' and 'Sunflowers' genres.
Need a definitive aerial (sp?) shot of a mountain
The Cancellara and Boonen classics shots don't add much - maybe they're too recent I don't know.
Is this image http://www.coppi.co.uk/holding/assets/f ... d-menu.pdf from a photo? Other Coppi suggestions welcome
The Lemond/Hinault and Hinault/Fignon photos above will be added.
The B&W Hinault at PR in the rainbow jersey is in.“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -

And this one was nominated
And of course this one, contestant for the most famous photographer taking a cycling related shot. But is it still a cycling photo?

Is this a range of photos that cover different angles and perspectives to enable a vote by the Bike Radar forum, or, TWH's favourite shots?
Half of them ones you included in your shortlist are pretty poor and should be removed or replaced.
Not including the best two Classics riders of their generation is not very representative.
Although age helps, it is not the only determinant of a great photo.
I agree a Lance photo is required. He is ugly and not stylish but there are some very good ones.
I've always liked this one and it has a story. There are other great ones.
Glasses reflection is a great idea. I have a ton of those but these two spring to mind:
This one I like (there are better angles for the shot in the visor):
I quite like these but they are not 'great':
Track gives good ones due to the large visor but
I know I have seen better and 'cleverer' ones than all of this.
Sunflowers, agreed. You can find one on the wallpaper thread:

Bit of both really.Half of them ones you included in your shortlist are pretty poor and should be removed or replaced.
Which ones should be outNot including the best two Classics riders of their generation is not very representative.
Agree on principle but nothing posted yet seems to me to really grab hold of a place on the short list.
Shame the flanders boy wasn't a photo.“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -

The title doesn't say "greatest cycling photos of the best two classics riders at a given point in cycling's (note, it didn't actually say cycle racing!) long and varied history". It says "Greatest cycling photo ever!" The identity of the subject is irrelevant, it's the emotions stirred by the quality of the photograph.Trail fun - Transition Bandit

Which ones should be out
IMO:
1. debatable
4. very average shot of Merckx
7. much better photos of Pantani
8. I think that was covered
9.I appreciate this photo as an old shot but it is just a cyclist having some food in the olden times. There are a ton of better old shots in terms of quality, story and composition
10. For me I wouldn't have this but can see how some would think it worthwhile
12. as far as classics shots go its pretty tame
In a similar vein as the one you posted (even though I wouldn't nominate these as great):Not including the best two Classics riders of their generation is not very representative.
Agree on principle but nothing posted yet seems to me to really grab hold of a place on the short list.
What ones of Fabu or Tommeke would stand out to you?Shame the flanders boy wasn't a photo.
The Flanders girl is in the same vein.
I thought about it earlier and I think Rich's point about a story as well as a superb shot is a good element to elevate and separate photos to new levels of greatness.
Generally as a structure I would think along the lines of, 1-2 photos of the 'Greats', a good selection from GTs and from Classics, some WC ones, one from each of the Monuments, a few 'old' ones, then the mountain shot, glasses shot, sunflower shot +misc. All just opinion though and given you started the thread I appreciate you can do as you wish!Contador is the Greatest0 -
