I take the bit about trek developing a Merckx style frame... I've just read one of the links posted and i see my mistake0

Isn't he saying you can't/shouldn't underestimate how hard it is otherwise you will fail ie you think it is easy so you don't train hard enough and then come up short.0

When looking for a picture of Francesco Moser's bike for his hour, I stumbled on this site:
http://www.bikeraceinfo.com/records/wrldhour.html
What's interesting is the years between attempts. Wonder if there is a list of those that tried and failed? I presume the training and preparation makes it difficult to plan and a pro rider would have to somehow squeeze it in or plan it for the end of their career.
I guess also, that the minutiae of the detail is such that an attempt would require huge backing and support that from a riders point of view, that person has to be 100% committed as failure is not an option.
I think i'd see Wiggo in a different light if he had a go and maybe some of the other Wiggo bashers would too.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
My thoughts on Wiggo's hour http://spokeydokeyblog.com/2014/08/29/199-laps-pt6/
As far as some of the other comments above, I can probably help a little. The black line is not actually the same height all the way round, as the track is steeper at the bankings than on the straights, and the black line is a certain distance from the inside of the track, so you'll find it higher on the bankings. To counteract this, if you look at team pursuit or pursuit riders, they'll hug the black line on the bankings, but drift up a little on the straights. This isn't an accident, it maintains their height on the track & helps to keep a steady power output, rather than going up & downhill slightly 4 times a lap, which when you're on the limit, can make all the difference.0 -

I'm going to say Wiggo first; because he has the greater track experience and secondly; because I think the singleminded approach required in terms of the preparation etc suits him more than the other two.
Yep, agreed. Martin and Canc will alays have eyes on other prizes (personally or throught the team), but Wiggo doing the hour - the great british cycling story - is a gift to Sky, British Cycling and anyone else who cares to look in...
I know, I know
WHY DOESNT HE UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS THAT HE DOES IT
I don't doubt that he knows "...HOW IMPORTANT IT IS THAT HE DOES IT". My take on it is that many of the "qualified" Pro riders are thinking more about what happens if they fail to do it. This would seem to be evidenced by the lack of attempts over the years. Doesn't seem as though there are too many riders even willing to give it a shot. Maybe these guys don't see a whole lot of glory and or money in it, either. And then if they fail? :?0 -

With the new rules coming in the record is very much up for grabs and within the grasp of many. So I expect that the first person to set a new mark will be someone with track experience who just gets on and tries it with not much preparation rather than a big name with lots of backing.Twitter: @RichN950

Think you're right there. First come first served. They won't hold it long though.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
If Cancellara wants to do the hour "old style", there's nothing stopping him doing it. All he needs is a track and a bike.0

He'd have to be over 100 for this to be interesting....

That's come out of the blue. I never think of him as a tester and I don't know if he's ever ridden the track, but why not, he must put out the power.0
-
Nice way to end the career if he gets it. Just bought my ticket now.0
-
Has he just broken the record for the shortest ever retirement from cycling?0
-
He just needs someone to chase him, make it like one big hour long break.0
-
How does his retirement impact on testing protocols etc?“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0

God bless Jens Voigt"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Good luck Jens.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Have to say I'm quite excited by this, hopefully he'll do it and we will see a bunch other riders trying to do the samePain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.0
-
I think Jensie will smash it. Should have the best of everything in order for him to put the best distance on the board.0

This is surely being done as a precursor to a Cancellara attempt? They can test equipment and the track without Cancellara losing face.0
