totally agree, perhaps it might be best to wait a few weekends before attempting one, but I wouldnt mind giving this ride a bash. Does it involve a bit of walking?

Not normally... I use SPD-SL cleats, so I am a bit reluctant to walk

I want to do another one of these. My shoulder is still giving me a lot of grief so I'm finding off road stuff a bit painful. I chased the hospital and I probably won't be seen until mid-March. I may need to man up and carry on regardless. Should probably try to get a bit fitter so I can keep up too. Will somebody slower than me please come out next time?

I am on Look's so will try to avoid walking at all cost!

I am sure I can do a good job of holding everyone up Veronese, so don't worry!

Any plans to run one of these rides again?

Yes, but it's been so wet that I am not sure where it's actually possible to go. Esher common is probably OK, as it's sandy soil that drains very well, other stretches are probably just deep bog.
I am not a big fan of deep bog to be honest

Was out in Esher Common last week and most of it's very rideable. I'm keen for another BR CX spin.

Are there any photos of the pave' sections?

    Let's pretend it's Esher...

Yes, Esher common is a sandy soil, but the other sectors are not so good at draining...

Actually the very muddy sections were a bit deep but firm enough to power through. Just have to watch out for submerged branches, they'll send you sideways :D
  • Is that the Kwaremont climb? Looks like the top part just before you come into the town.

Is Roberto Heras now into building supplies?
    When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.

    Paterberg...

I've also got the Kapel Muur on a sunny day (the Milram kit was a freebie for winning a fantasy Giro on a german website... )

  • Want to have a go this saturday? There is a big yellow sun on the BBC weather site

    It won't be a 50/50 off/on road, more like a 20/80

Might give it a go, though I may not last the distance. I'm out for the day tomorrow so it depends on what time I get back as I have to take the guards off and change tyres amongst other bits of dicking about. I'll check on here when I get back.

Sorry, I'm not going to make it. I've been out all day and my shoulder is really playing up. Good news is I had phone call from the hospital and they've got me in on Wednesday due to a cancellation. Not looking forward to the procedure though, injecting steroid and saline into the joint to try and free it up. Supposedly a rather uncomfortable thing to have done. Hopefully I will be a bit more active soon.

I'm not surprised, I had that done a couple of years ago and it was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever experienced. Not painful as such but uncomfortable.

On a brighter note it works incredibly well at freeing up the shoulder joint and reducing ongoing pain in the joint :D
  • ended up doing a road ride down to Box Hill... some lanes are flooded... I'm afraid is still a bit early for Off-road

That tops a week of great cycling weather... 170 miles...

 Even if the saline doesn't cause corrosion, the steroid will get you a doping ban.

If I were you I'd use GT-85 to free it up, and then inject grease to keep it moving...

Next time CJ tells me I should try a cross race I'll use this as my excuse.
You're right about the GT85, I stupidly used WD40 and I think that's why there is a lack of fluid.

Found out this nice 4 Km technical stretch, quite rocky and lots of tree roots... probably one of the longest climbs in the area but never steep and one of the few places where you can't hear noise coming from some road

Sounds a bit like a climb on the London to Brighton off road, long and very rooty. But it's this one:

A real pain trying to climb it when overtaking hundreds of other people going really slowly or walking. I might try the whole thing on the cross bike one day. You fancy it?

My shoulder's a lot better and DIY permitting I need to ride more.

Sounds like a plan, I'll check with the calendar and see when I'm free. Quite a lot of the route is a long drag along the Downs Link. There are a few quite technical bits in the North and South Downs but not too many. Saw quite a few people on cross bikes, one of the said he'd walked a couple of bits. The last climb up onto the South Downs is very steep, I managed it on the mountain bike but might struggle on the CX.
    Anybody else fancy it?

My calendar's a bit rammed, but if it ended up being late July I'd be interested. Don't organise anything around me, though.

We can probably cut off the bits within the M25 and plough straight down to Cobham down the A 307... if it's early in the morning it's not too bad a road... that leaves more time/energy to enjoy the rest of the route

Good point as it's only Richmond Park and the river then roads through Weybridge. The off road starts at Byfleet just before the M25 anyway.

Anyone for a bash on sunday?

Kind of early start from RP and 4 hours, taking in some bridleways in the Surrey Downs... maybe even a coffee somewhere

Would've loved to but will hopefully be testing myself against so trails on the Isle of Wight.

I'll talk nicely to my wife. I'm half way through renovating the kitchen so may struggle to get out. But everything is working at the moment so if I don't break anything I might manage to get out.
I was thinking about having a go at that London to Brighton route as well once I've finished with the house.

Would love to, sadly I'll be toiling up one of those awful French Alpine climbs :-(
