Not sure if this has been mentioned but Movistar have just signed up Quintana's 22yr old younger brother....

2 Quintana's got to be better than 1 right?

Bike changing reminds me of this...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e8W4oEC2Co

(And I do think they should be allowed to change bikes if they want to. Just a bit surprised some of the changes were so bad. I would have thought a bike my the side of the road would have been quicker than having to take one off the team car...)

True but can you imagine being the soigneur tasked with keeping hold of 9 bikes all worth 5000 minimum surrounded by a baying crowd and then trying to put the right rider on the right bike

plus what if you puncture before the switch point?
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

    Triathlon type bike changes next.
Be already out your shoes on Bike 1 with the new ones ready to go on Bike 2. No push off required. Could provide some good entertainment when they muck it up!

PS I also think they should have to stick with one type of bike from start to finish

That was fun. Enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to when the rains came.

Haven't bothered reading the rest of the thread, find them too depressing to bother with mostly but my take on bike changes which I suspect has been debated.

    1. Should only be allowed to change in the event of a mechanical.
    2. Should only be allowed to change for a bike of the same type.
    3. Rider should not be allowed to get a push if they decide to change.

To be honest I wasn't sure there was enough advantage in having a TT bike for the final section to justify the time loss in changing due to the technical nature of the course but it appeared to be worth about 20 seconds compared to 10 seconds lost in the change.

    1. Impossible to enforce "the brakes were rubbing, thought I was flat, gears hopped"
    2. That would effectively ban TT bikes for most teams, or at least restrict them to their very top riders.
    3. What if they crash? Still have to start up alone? I think I could still live with it.

    1. Sort of agree but that's why I put in point 2.
    2. Not sure what you mean but assume you are referring to most riders only having one TT bike in which case a reasonable point. I'd be tempted to argue that the change from road to TT bike should be banned but I have seen other time trials with uphill finishes where riders switch from TT bike to road. I just don't like the idea of a cycling equivalent of a race being determined by pitstop strategy.
    3. I did say no push if they decide to change, the bike should be already set up in the necessary gear. At the very least any push should be restricted so that the helper can't run with the bike. Froome's change was ridiculous

Any news from BMC about Evan's poor ride? Is he sick? I was hoping he would at least go off on a mad attack in the third week. Did he conserve energy today to monster tomorrow, or is he sick?

Looks remarkably like a younger version.

You don't need to change bikes for the entire team, just your team leader. And you can still have a spare on the team car. The only downside is you would have to fix the switch point. You couldn't change it whilst the stage is taking place.

His twitter suggests he was taking it nice and easy. Perhaps looking to grab a stage this week.

I'm totally watching that DVD tonight.

Was Froome at Barloworld that year? My only memory of them in that years Tour was Jon Lee Augustyn falling off a cliff.

Is that (one of )the stage(s) where Menchov did one of his inexplicable fall- off- a- bike- going- uphill tricks?

Nah, that was the famous stage to Italy where all sorts of stuff went off. Menchov's fall, Peireiro falling off a hairpin on a descent, Evans dog and CONI deciding they'd do a little blood test on Valverde...

It's rubbish. The only rider to attempt to stay with Sastre was Menchov and he blew before hairpin 20

I reckon it`s the bananas. I haven`t seen him eat many of them this year.

Here`s hoping the next few days are also exciting and that Froome does not crush all his rivals like almost every stage that mattered so far this Tour.

Apparently Froome was thinking he was just going to be limiting his losses today so was very surprised to win. To who exactly and why? No sincerity.

Froome is like that annoying girl in school who said "I didn't do any study, I'm gonna do terrible in this exam….oh look I got an A+".

At a guess Contador. Todays stage included a lot of technical descent as well as the ascent and Froome knew from yesterday that Contador was willing to take more risks on the descents than him; same goes for a lot of other riders that have less to lose and more to gain than Froome.

According to the organisers there is no possibility of tomorrow's stage being shortened which will disappoint Froome who has apparently said several times he hopes the Sarenne descent will be cancelled if it rains.
