This is my 2012 Giant TCR Composite 2. It's basically a new bike, i know I should of just bought a new bike but it's been super fun upgrading.

    Ultegra r8000 groupset (cranks 170mm)
    Rear Cassette 11/32
Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon Road Wheelset 2017
    Zipp SL70 aero bars
Zipp Service Course SL Stem (100mm)
    Fizik ALIANTE R1 Open
    Look Keo pedals.
    LizardSkin bar tape
    Wahoo Bolt headunit

only thing annoying me is the steerer tube length but with a new frame or bike on the horizon next year, it's best to leave it.
    Please excuse the paintbucket! lol

Shane miller has just bought one mate
(well, the 0 not the 1, but he seems well happy)

  • Yeah, I’m going rim rather than disc, but I watched that yesterday and he seemed pleased,

    I'm torn between:

    Giant_TCR_Advanced_Pro_1_Disc_2018_01-1024x682watermark.jpg

    and

    su-kien-ra-mat-xe-dap-thuong-hieu-giant-model-nam-2019-1-TCR-ADV-PRO-1.jpg

    i.e between disc and caliper.

I'd get the latter in last year's colours but this year's version has 42mm rims rather than 30mm. In some ways I'd prefer the disc but that, too, "only" has 30mm rims.

So, the other options is last year's rim brake:

The cheapest of all of them, but the 42mm on the newer one look nicer...

I have the 2018 version of the Advanced Pro 1 and it’s brilliant, it really is. I’d prefer deeper wheels but only for aesthetics. One thing I found though was that if you were caught out in a rain shower then the braking was pretty leary. I found the Giant carbon wheels to be lethal. Obviously you ride to conditions but I found I had about 10% braking in wet conditions. This is with the supplied carbon pads from Giant/Shimano. I may swap for some of the LifeLine pads from Wiggle which get good reviews. Having said that, if this is a best bike then the rim brake model is excellent. It weighs bugger all and handles like a dream. The R8000 is a lovely bit of kit and works reliably as you’d expect. There’s some flex in the seat post but this aids with comfort. The tubeless setup also absorbs the bumps well. All makes for a great ride. I did consider the disc model (the blue one) and on reflection I think I should have gone with that one but it was a few hundred pounds more. I’ve not ridden it anywhere near as much as I should have done though as my other bike is the mile muncher in the stable.
  • Thanks!

It's a choice between the 2019 and 2018 only on aesthetics as you say. £500 difference or so. I do slightly prefer the above colour too. Choices, choices.

The disc sits right in the middle of both, so £250 more than the caliper version.

AFAIK there’s no other difference? Which disc model is it? This year’s or last years? I got mine for £2189 from Rutland Cycling who price matched it with Triton Cycles. Looking forward to getting some proper riding done on it when (if!) the better weather arrives! I’m not too serious-a-cyclist so this bike is far more capable than I. I like hills so the weight is perfect and I find the 52/36 combined with the 11-30 cassette is a good mix. I don’t find myself wanting more teeth on the uphills and likewise on the downhills.

I did bust a spoke on the rear wheel after about 300 miles and had to be rescued by the in-laws but Rutland Cycling sorted that for me under warranty. Well, they bodged a spoke in it for me as the ‘proper’ ones were on back order. They left the end of the nipple in the rim rattling about so after a complaint I ended up getting a new wheel from them.

I guess it’s how much you’d miss the extra £500 and how much more performance/enjoyment you’d get out of the deeper wheels...

Ahhh yes, all pics working now. Have you seen the disc model in real life? The colour is stunning, it really is. From the pics I’d say the newest model looks best but the pic of the 2018 model isn’t doing it many favours.

You could get the 2018 model and a pair of Prime 50mm wheels and tyres from Wiggle/CRC for £500... then you’d have even deeper wheels for bling and the standard wheels as spares/climbing wheels. Or you could flog em and more than likely make your money back as they retail at £1k!
  • Pedalon were doing the 2018 pro1 over the Christmas period for £1620,the rim brake model. An absolute bargain.Might be worth a mail if still undecided
  • Yeah, the prices are:

    2019 rim 2399
    2018 rim 1799
    2018 disc 2000
