Boats are weird. A buddy of mine here has just been made Skipper of a new build boat costing 70million quid. Its about 85m long, and his boat doesn't even figure in the top 100 most expensive private pleasure boats in the world. My point being for 70 million quid you could by 6 top line villas in say, Mallorca, Cap DÁntibes, Barbados, Fort Lauderdale and something in the Seychelles and STILL have cash left over to fly your private jet whenever you wanted. Why would anyone EVER buy a 70 million yacht which has a crew of 40 and sleeps 8 guests...I get the whole p***ing contest (my mate lives in Monacco and showed me where Stavros Niarchos had his boat, Atlantis, LENGTHENED to make his boat longer than Aristole Onassises boat), but if youre not in the top 100 why even bother?

Crude oil is a fossil fuel extracted from the ground, via a process called fractional distillation it makes diesel.

Crude oil and diesel would therefore not appear to be the same

That's the whole point! Once you have enough to live on, comfortably, and not have to worry, money is only relative. You're either happy with what you've got (in which case you are the lucky one) or you want more (seemingly like most) and no matter how much more you get, you'll never be happy because there is always someone else with more. And because you are stupid, you care about such things so you blow 70 million on an oversized fibreglass bath tub in the vague hope that someone else will be impressed by it. But the only people who will be impressed are those who are less rich than you and want to be more rich than you. And who cares what they think because the only difference between you and them is that they have slightly less money that they don't know what to do with than you?!

As an ex oil trader, may I chip in?

Luxury yachts such as those on the transport ship use diesel, used to be untaxed, now is, depending on where you are. Used to be a poorer grade of diesel, but more recently, generally is now the same as road quality.

The transport ship as with all other large vessels, uses fuel oil, not crude oil. (They could in theory use crude oil at a push, depending on the grade, but would be a waste of money).

Fuel oil is the heavy, viscous stuff left at the bottom after you've distilled crude. There are 2 main grades, High sulphur, 3.5% and low sulphur 1%. Also used in power stations. Needs to be kept heated to keep viscosity down.

The engines on these big ships are 'diesel' engines, but much larger, and rev much slower, and use low quality fuel oil.

Some high performance big vessels use jet turbines, and therefore burn kerosene.

Ohh ive no problem with that, if I make a mistake ill gladly take it on the chin, I thought the large vessel ran on crude but that doesn't make me a liar as the quite rudely put post from the loons above suggests.

It would be fine to make a mistake if it wasn't made whilst trying to put someone else down for their lack of knowledge. And they were right all along.

Yes, its that paradox I dont understand. Why are they trying to impress someone poorer with them about how much money they have. Its like boasting to your mum how much of a ladies man you are.

    This is nonsense.
If someone is a billionaire and they decide to buy a Yacht for £70m so be it.
What is the harm ? if you earn it you have the right to spend it. Why people dislike that principle is beyond me, its truly laughable.

Does it make you sick that in the time it took you to write that sentence I could have made what you earn in a week :)

Is that the kind of comment your after ?

    I have an idea.

I dislike you on the net, I think your the epitome of the kind of people I dispose in real life but having said that, I am fully aware of the fact that the internet isn't the best place to find out the value of a true person so how about this.

I have a space on our team for this years Gumball3000 Rally and would welcome you on the team, ill foot the bill and you can see things from my side of the fence, hang out with some crazy loons who are the real life version of your internet self and see for yourself.

This is a genuine offer, it could be a great social experiment if your willing.

Aren't you digressing a bit. Certainly I made no comment on whether or not you should be able to spend £70m on a yacht. I did comment on the motives of someone for doing so.

But since you raise the point - what is the harm in a billionaire spending money on anything he likes? Well, I'd like to think that if I had that much money I would feel just a little bit guilty that I couldn't think of anything better to spend my money on. Infact, I think I'd hope I would feel extremely guilty. I can spend a couple of thousand on a bike or an old Saab and probably think that that money isn't going to make a real difference elsewhere but to spend £70m on something that I will get no more pleasure out of than I'd get out of said Saab or bike just seems a bit wrong to me.

But that's not to say that such people don't have the right. Perhaps they shouldn't have that right though.
