Bit of snow here (though absolutely none forecast - thanks BBC). More horrible though was the SE headwind blowing all of the snow into my face. We almost never get a SE wind (the rare occasions we do leads to a mass assault on the Kessock Bridge KoM)

    You know it...!

TBH my back garden is reasonably sheltered, we went out to the common, 100yards away, to make a snowman and the snow is over juniors wellies, which are about 5" in height.

Snowing here now looks fairly light. For now.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
  • What?! Snow in winter??!! Good grief, whatever next.

People who live in actual cold countries with actual snow must laugh their a$$es off at the UK when the road/rail/air networks grind to a halt every time there's a light dusting of the stuff....

Every year someone "in authority" will claim the expense of investing in proper cold-weather kit is unjustifiable given our climate, and every year, the first time it snows, the entire country goes into a tailspin.

Yep, they do! It's a common joke in our office whenever extreme weather is mentioned.

and even last night the BBC, whilst I watched the News channel late in the evening, said that, and I can't remember which authority figure or department it was, people should not travel unless absolutely necessary.
So, it snows therefore you must remain in your house unless you or someone in your household needs to get to hospital right there and then. I hope all these people out on their cars and cycling around, are arrested for behaving irresponsibly.

  • Bored from two days of working from home and with my car refusing to start, I cycled in this morning. Loved it. The snow was lighter nearer work than it was at home, and the main roads were clear and wet rather than icy. The back roads were more of a challenge but they looked nicer.

I work for a Finnish company, and we've got a 2-day set of meetings next week here in the UK.
We'll show them Finns how to cope with extreme weather !

To be fair, the first snow of the winter always causes chaos here too, at least on the roads. Then everyone changes their tyres, and it goes back to business as usual.

To be fair, we're pretty good at dealing with it up here - there's almost no fuss and bother at all.

That was my experience in Vermont. First snow and there were cars off the road everywhere. I said to the people I was visiting that I was surprised, given how much snow Vermont gets and they said that it always takes them a couple of weeks to remember how to drive on snow...

It's the tyres that make the difference, I think. I'm crap at driving on snow, I've not that much experience at it. But think how good Ice Spiker bike tyres are with 300 spikes, then consider you have more spikes, the stability of 4 wheels and a lot more weight forcing the spikes into the ice. The car just goes where you point it.

Oh, for sure. My old Merc E-Class refused to budge off the drive on summer tyres. Stick on winter tyres and it would go anywhere I wanted it to (provided the snow wasn't so deep to beach it). Needless to say, I swap to winter tyres on both the cars now as well as the bike

Are you still allowed studs on the road in Scandinavia? Last time I went to Sweden, we had studs but I thought they were now banned in favour of unstudded winter tyres as they damaged the roads too much.

You're allowed to use them from October to April, and also if the road conditions require it (e.g. you go to a cabin in the mountains in May). In Oslo there's a tyre tax (or fine) for studs in the city centre, but elsewhere they're ok. They do trash the roads though, especially roundabouts. And they scare the crap out of you if you hear them lock up behind you while cycling.

not as much fun going home as I'd hoped, the headwind blowing snow into my face made it difficult to see, almost stopped here now though
  • Break in the snowfall, still daylight, off I go....

I have to say that I rarely find cycling in snow "fun". I like the variety but give me a sunny summer's morning anyday

Fun in the white stuff in Caversham, down in Reading it's just a slushy mess.

Well i didnt get killed to death, it was, how shall we say, "Meh!"

Just like a wet day only with more dirt. A couple of traction issues on the 25 slicks but that is just probably t'powerawesome!! other than that not sure what all the fuss was about really. If anything the roads were quiet.

On the downside the focus is now filthy again after last weeks strip and clean and will need doing all over again.

MRS is right sunny summers morning/evening are to be savoured.

well im still in the office in finchley, will be hitting some off road sections on my way home to cheer myself up after the awful day ive been having
  • Not at all pleasant ride home. Actually came off going over a speed-bump on the slushiest part of my route, shamed but not hurt. In my liners & Planet X gloves, fingers got so cold I nearly cried when the circulation came back in them. Shan't be doing that again without changing to decent winter tyres.

All the way home without an incident. Sections of the country lanes were covered but I just forgot about them and plugged on. 90 degree bends I didn't bother slowing down for, all I got was a louder rice crispie noise as the outside studs bit in.

My road was completely covered and quite deep in places, it was slightly bizarre as it felt EASIER to cycle on and everything went completely quiet. Climbed the hill on proper snow without a problem then stacked it when I turned on to the drive too fast!

Oh, and NO footage as the lens got completely covered after 3 miles, all I had was a grey blob recorded for 40 minutes.
