    Getting stuck.

Did you miss that bit?

(on New Year hols with some friends staying in Penmachno. I got some stunning photos that year:

Enjoy yourself - feedback always welcome!

(oh and the 'famous' ones from the year before: http://s190.photobucket.com/albums/z146 ... s/Snowdon/ )

Oh, and when we got to the other end of the road we found a Road Closed sign! (there wasn't one at the end we joined at)

Winters do squirm - it's quite unnerving at first. Do treat ice with caution on the Winters - I got rear wheelspin frequently on steep climbs and also came off on a hard-frozen adverse camber corner. They are good but not foolproof. It's why I run Ice Spiker Pros on the MTB instead - I can maintain reasonable speeds (15mph into work & 14mph (net uphill) back yesterday) over the 15 miles each way and, in 3 years of using them, I've never experienced the slightest "moment" as they have 3x as many studs as the Winters (and actually weigh less). I think they are overkill for most people but I face a lot of ice.

Thanks, will proceed with caution tonight.
Though I think that's a given as it is still -6 outside - something of a novelty for us.

For the couple of weeks a year I get to use the Winters its not worth me reinvesting but will certainly take a look at the Ice Spikers when I need replacements.

    No.
Takes me back to the weather and road conditions of November/December 2010.
I can drive fairly well in the snow and road conditions have never prevented me getting anywhere.
Numpties that can't drive is what causes the road congestion, not a little snow.
Here is a road that i was happy driving up a couple of years ago.

  • Never had any slippage on ice using the Marathon Winters, find them completely predictable. Bastard heavy and slow, but predictable.
  • No snow here, but the local lakes have reached 13cm ice thickness, which is officially safe to go on.
I might try to make some new seasonal Strava segments tonight..

Be warned kB if London gets more than 1/2 inch of snow all hell will break loose no one will be able to get anywhere or do anything.

  • Here we go. 1 mile, perfectly flat and smooth, but not for roadies.

Last night, on a different lake:
    IMAG0108_zps29640cad.jpg

Almost no brakes, almost no steering, and wheel spin if you pedal too hard. I'm not sure if better tyres would help; mine are Nokian Extremes which have been very good but now over 1500 miles old.

Not sure if that is Awesome or down right mental.

34mph downhill this morning on mixed black ice and ice patches, loving the cx kitted out in ice studs.

Going up was slow mind you.

So then, what tyres/vehicle for getting to work and back in the snow?
    -Car on Conti winter contacts
    -Cx bike on marathon winters
    -cx bike on cx knobblies
    -mtb on mud tyres
    -Mtb on wide (2.35") knobblies.

    Decisions, decisions....

Missus would kill me if I commuted in snow...but would my CX on current tyre set up...i.e.

-cx bike on cx knobblies (http://www.conti-tyres.co.uk/conticycle ... d_cl.shtml) be sufficient on snow and also ice or do I need to get the Marathon Winters/ or equivalent?

Not a chance on snow - you need the full treaded ones. Nothing else but spikes on the ice (as I have found out)

Mud tyres are best in snow. Studded tyres best on ice.

Forecast changing now. Only expected to be heavy snow in the Southern part of England and Wales. Light snow for the North but more (light) snow for the weekend than previously forecast.

I'll be commuting on the Tourer (on near slicks).
