My mistake - I thought you'd said they were Superstar grips, but that was the post prior to yours. They probably do all come out of the same one or two factories in the far east.

Good point! Can you tell I'm a roadie? :P
    LOL, inexperienced with MTB's anyway!

Adjust the brake levers so that when seated and hands on bars your extended fingers (straight) should just rest on top of the levers, otherwise your wrists are wtisted up to reach the lever.

Right, ive got my 2004 Kraken frame chilling in the garage looking a bit lonely and sorry for its self. Im getting bits together for a winter trainer bike.
Not hugely keen on the paintwork design an was thinking about a new colour either a strip an dip at the powder coaters in silver or strip by hand and give it a brushed finish what do you guys think?

Powdercoat. Costs bugger all, and zero effort involved, other than taking it to the coater.

Not much point giving the weight really, I'd guess at about 12-12.5Kg.

The stock thick silver 'goo' is a real PITA to get off, had I known when I started I wouldn't have DIYed it!

Any recomendations for a nice, light stem? Looking at a Ritchey WCS 4Axis Stem (90mm) for £37 and 112g. Planning on getting one as well as a EC70 flat bar (125g) in the next week so I should be saving over 100g!

I thought I'd put the weight so far up there anyway. I really like the carrera bikes, and the process are great too.

I have a Superstar one, 80mm and 123g, the Bikehut one is the same, not quite as light as the Ritchey but you may be able to use the same budget better elsewhere!

Just managed to squeeze mine down to 10.1Kg.

But it just doesn't look as good! Haha plus that link is for 25.4mm bars, mine are oversized. Cheers though, I did have a look at the KCNC stems.

Why have you got a 203mm rear? I would switch them round if I were you! ;)

it was a freebee but original forks couldn't take 203 so put it on rear - front has more than enough power for her anyway plus its not actually a great rotor you can't tell the difference between the two. I'll eventually get a rear M615 and another rotor but what size I don't know.

yeah suits the wife as she's a woman

feels too short for me but the forks have transformed the ride. lost 4.1lb with the forks and tyres. Can't believe how much the wheels and tyres weigh though.

they do a female version of my boys Carrera blast too in that colour.
  • Hi... nice to see the thread. have loved my Subway Ltd Ed except for one niggle. The handlebars seem too low! I've tried a variable riser (see pic) and am about to fit the satori extender today to see if that'll crack the problem. Apart from that it's pretty much stock and used for the daily commute from Folkestone to Hythe and back on the sea front. Murder with a headwind... but bloody glorious with a tailwind on the way home!

The lower the bars the better it is in a headwind!

My commuter is a Gryphon and I run the stem direct on the headset flipped and flat bars.

I can tuck down now i've dropped four stone... plus the next bike is going to be a road bike so i'll be arse up / head down for sure then! But was tired of the neck ache from looking up / forwards all the time. Just fitted the satori extender and it's excellent! Google "subway limited edition handlebars" and you'll see it's a very very common complaint. Can't all be fat buggers like i was!
Mind you, I followed the Halfords size chart and at a tad below 6ft the 20" frame should have been fine. But I read in places that Halfords seem dead set on selling bikes a smidge too small for people if they follow the chart. Either way, the extender has saved the day.
  • i finally remembered to get a pic of mine out where it likes it best

Few changes on that! Stem bars and wheels at the very least!
