    Any photo's?

Clearly had some upgrades there then, I thought the blue frames were older, circa 2008-9, red 2010-11 and then the new design frame in 2012 (with the top tube to set tube reinforcing)
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

If I remember right (and I'm fairly sure), 2008 was black (first year they fitted hydraulic brakes, and it had remote lockout too). I remember looking at one in comparison to my heavily discounted silver 2007 that I bought just after the 2008 models came out.

I believe you are correct. My son has the red black frame which is a standard (except forks )2009 model. Mine i'm almost sure is 2011 but may be 2010.
I don't know enough to make smart r's remarks about peoples choice of parts 'n' things, yet!

Picked up a 2nd hand Vulcan for the missus. Didn't bother getting a ladies mtb, picked up this 18" vulcan in really good nick. Changed the bars, stem and grips for her (Easton EA30 & Superstar). Will look to change the tyres and brakes at some point and yes the seat is huge but her derriere is happy with it!

I'm not saying that the colour is intrinsically girly (I actually like the colour), just that colour only came on the ladies' frames.

I've ridden a ladies Cannondale MTB bike and it wasn't any different to a men's one besides the colour and saddle design ride quality was the same.

the colours okay not my first choice but its not a disaster. pink/gold/bronze/brown I think are the worst colours

It's easier with cars - you can tell whether it's a girls' car or blokes' car by whether the sun visor vanity mirror is on the passenger or driver's side, lol...

That's because the frame is the only thin 2010 Kraken left......at least mine is 7 years old to the same state!

    20130101_114807.jpg
    current weight is 10,550g

Have a 'new' headset to go on which will shave 40g, I'm also considering a KCNC seatpost clamp which will shave another 17g, once the tyres are worn out I'll also be going lighter there with a circa 250g saving. Total parts prices as the bike stands is £500, total cost of ownership has been £610.

Fitted a new stem to mine today. Same model as my existing one (that's only been used 3 times, lol), but 20mm shorter at 90mm. Feels better, based on a quick play in the street after fitting.

Hit the trails today (literally a couple of times, lol) and the shorter stem's a definite improvement. Feel more central on the bike now, not stretched out over the front.

I swapped from 100 to 80mm and felt much the same.....

Greer, for info just measured a spare Deore front mech (triple, dual pull 31.8mm clamp) I have - 136g, so if you can find a Deore locally it will be a handy weight saving!

I just weighed an X5 off a Carrera (Banshee, 34.9mm seat tube) and it was 176g, so it's about right!

Only problem is that I enjoyed myself so much yesterday (but didn't get much sleep last night 'cos my thighs were hurting so much - had to get up in the early hours and neck some ibuprofen, lol) that I can see expenditure on the horizon, lol. Ordered some grippier pedals last night, cos my feet keep slipping on the pinless originals and I'd like some better forks and hydraulic brakes. Or that Giant Trance X2 in my LBS or possibly a new Canyon AL+, lol...

    Ordered these, reduced to £27.99:

This is a mates Vulcan which he handed over for me to revive for him on a very tight budget.

New fork, new QR skewers, new chainset, new brakes, new cables, rear hub service, new chain and a good scrub later and it looks like this:

    477766_10151496356999472_322971285_o_zpsf2cc2897.jpg

Vulcan 20" (not sure how old)
Sram X4 shifters and mech (truly awful but he doesn't have the budget to upgrade at the mo)
    Shimano M445 brakes
Recon TK silver (replaced the old Bombers which were beyond terrible - not sure if broken or just shoot)
Mavic rims on basic shimano hubs
Rubber queen 2.2's (wired and not BC compound unfortunately)
    Raceface stem
    Bikehut bar and seatpost
    Sofa saddle
    Basic Shimano square taper chainset

Rides fairly well and the fork is a huge improvement but it is a heavy beast at 14.8kg. I made most of the repairs/replacements using my spares bin but I had to buy in the chainset.
