Well a lot of improvements there, Hydraulics and the forks should ride so much better than original!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

It actually already had hydros fitted - 'Bikehut' branded with silver calipers and levers. Not sure if they were stock or aftermarket, my mate bought the bike from the free ads.

The old ones were surprisingly good for old, obviously budget brakes but the new fork is post mount and the caliper had a strange design which wouldn't fit around the brake adapter. Had the Shimanos which I knew fitted so I threw them on. However, this has now caused an issue with the shifters.. it seems old X4 shifters weren't designed with Shimano levers in mind resulting in a fairly uncomfortable shifter/brake lever position on the bars. Have suggested he replaces shifters and mechs with something more up to date so that should solve that problem.

Excellent thread chaps... But I think I might win Old Carrera Trumps. An early 90s (92?) Krakatoa Flex.

    As it is today, commuterised.

As it was back in the day- bullhorn bars, flexstem, all that terrible ****. But still better than my brothers on their Sarcinz.

And a modern Kraken, with a few tasteful mods, up the top of innerleithen.

This is in bits now though, I used it for parts when I built my Soda. Not sure what it'll be next.

The red Vulcans came with Tektro cable, the bikehut branded ones are aftermarket only (from halfords) and rebranded clarks I believe.

Couldn't tell you. It's a mates bike so I have never ridden it properly off road.

Interesting. Well they will be in the classifieds as soon as I have cleaned them up and taken some pictures.

Fitted my new pedals today (CNC machined, black anodised loveliness in the shape of Wellgo B54s). Bigger platform and grippy as hell - I won't be slipping around on these buggers like on the originals.

Does anyone know for certain what size Powerspline bottom bracket I need to order for my 2007 Kraken?

A Halfords store should be able to look it up for you against the bike specs, they were still using the same powerspline in Banshee's at least until quite recently.

I use Rubber queens 2.2 they come up big compared to the 2.2's on my wife's bike, but I find them very grippy and they give me confidence on trails wet or dry.

Cheers. I'd be reluctant to order anything based on info from your average Halfords monkey though...

I know on the 2004 it was 68mm, not sure if they changed it, again its best getting halfords to check unless you can remove it yourself and measure it (or read it off the side).

I chucked on a chain guide today took it for a little blast around the lake near me cant tell its there when I ride unless I back pedal. noticed a fair bit less chain slap.

Also question on shifters, Ive the Deore shifters the bike came with but the gear indicators are making it a pain to line up the brakes for single finger braking. Im sure ive heard people doing this but how do you get them off? I know what gear im in so theyve become surplus to requirement.

I noticed that on a bike I was trying for size in my LBS the other day. I would've wanted to swap the shifters and brake levers round on the bars for a comfortable spacing, but wouldn't have been able to because of the shape of the gear indicators (on my SRAM shifters the indicator's no wider than the clamp, which makes far more sense).

As for my bottom bracket, I don't need the measurements now - my BB's fine, it's my rear wheel free hub that's fooked.

You know how you hear about how Halfords destroyed the Saracen brand name? Those 2 there are prime examples of how they went about it. The Raw 2 in that pic is an 18.8kg URT, with wheels that say "EXTREME USE ONLY" and a frame that says "XC USE ONLY"

Ha, yeah I had a friend that had a double suspension Saracen when I was around 14 and I was so jealous of his bike.....I thought it was so much better than my Raleigh activator!!

TBH I didn't realise they did 'decent' bikes anymore til i found mine....suppose they're another brand that are always going to be tarred with that brush along with Carreras and boardman however good a bike they are.

Do tell how Halfords did it, they never sold Saracens after all.

Due to a new full sus project (viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=12928408) I have morphed my ever faithful Vulcan into the Vulcan 'Roadie' with a view to using it on the black stuff mid-week or on my turbo trainer to develop my general cycling fitness for weekend off road fun....and also to avoid running through the week to keep fit as I hate running!!

So to achieve the 'Roadie' tag I've applied a set of Panaracer Urban Max 26x1.25 skinnies that I had hanging on the wall from a charity bike ride I did years ago, along with locking out the front shocks for a more rigid/direct ride. Other than that it'll just be pedalling required!

A few pics of the new look.

My only worry is that my nice recently acquired Deore disc brakes overwhelm the tyres so I might need to go careful initially to get used to the different contact patch!!

Hopefully tomorrow will see a box of goodies come from CRC to allow me to finish off the Mount Vision build in readiness for next weekend and some bouncy off road fun 8) ......

    Ride safe, Corners

On tarmac you'll have more grip from those than knobblies....

Couple of new bargain additions - 750mm Funn bars from Chain Reaction (reduced from £49.99 to a silly £14.99) and a new old stock X5 front shifter for £13 from Taiwan to replace my sticking original:

I have a Carrera Kraken '04 model sitting at my parents under there lean-too, was my first proper mountain bike, had a look at it the other day and thought to myself why didn't I upgrade it instead of buying a Specialized Rockhopper back in 2008. Some of the bikes in this thread make me feel like reviving it but I don't have the need for two bikes.

Out of interest how much does the standard Kraken '04 frame weigh and anyone know where I can find the weight of my Specialized frame?

I got another new addition on mine this week - an ugly scrape first time out on the corner of one of my brand new tasty pedals from a rock strike. Grrrr
