    Remember him well.
Back in the day of 2 and a half telly channels, my mom and dad used to watch his shows on telly.

I saw him on gold cup day at Cheltenham races (98 I think).

Anyway, Charlie says 'I must go to bed'.

The smell of Sellotape when wrapping presents.
I remember that 1st day of school smell. It must have been derived from the Polyester in new school uniforms but when I sometimes get a whiff of it, it reminds me of those days.

    "Its ok officer, really!
I'm just hanging around the school for a sniff."

    You'd be fine, I'm sure.

I have virtually no sense of smell, due to nasal polyps and the operations to remove them.
But sometimes, I get the brief whiff of something, anything really and it cheers me up a little bit.

It does mean that I can't tell if my farts smell or not.
Mind you, I have a wife that does that for me.

Glue sniffing was all the rage when I was a youth. With a big glue manufacturer in my town, Ballys can guess where that was. The ruin of a few kids as well, that was.
But...the school glue in the sticky bottles (Gloy?) was, and smelt, ace. It would get in your hair and everything. Happy days.
The most evocative sense is smell, and boot polish takes me right back to the days when I joined the army as a lad. The sense is really strong, like you're right back there.

Gloy - wasn't that a form of PVA? I remember putting a light layer on our hands, letting it dry and spooking the girls by showing them your skin peeling off.

Yes, smells. There are certain hospital smells that take me back and my head will start spinning.

When in Portugal last year, I got a whiff of the hot sand. It tool me back to the tropics.

And that's the best thing I've heard for a long time. I honestly think the day I grow up, it's over. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you All! Much to look forward to - lengthening days, pub stops in the beer garden, life, love and laughter (just avoid the Brexit thread).

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

    Merry Christmas.

Speaking of childhood, at Xmas there was a choice of Roses or Quality Street. My favourite being Roses. My allegiance has now changed to QS even with the rise of Heroes and Celebrations

Best Christmas quote, from a 50-something friend:

    That's the one.

This has cheered me up lately: pork pies. The really big ones, about the size of your head. With lots of mustard and washed down with Banks' mild ale. That's what I'm having for breakfast while trying to clear up from last night. Could be a very slow day.
