Life bans for three athletics figures over alleged doping cover-up
Former IAAF consultant Papa Massata Diack and Russian officials Valentin Balakhnichev and Alexei Melnikov were last month charged with multiple breaches of anti-doping rules relating to Russian athlete Liliya Shobukhova.
Ex-IAAF anti-doping director Gabriel Dolle has been banned for five years.
IAAF president Lord Coe said the bans "could not send a stronger message".
Diack and Balakhnichev, a former Russian athletic federation president and IAAF treasurer, face fines of £17,000 while Russian coach Melnikov could be fined £10,000.
The independent IAAF ethics commission panel's 167-page report claims Diack, Balakhnichev and Melnikov conspired to "blackmail" Shobukhova to cover up her doping violations by her paying them "bribes" of about £435,000.
Last month, Diack told the BBC he "totally rejects" the blackmail allegations, saying: "There was no extortion of funds from any athlete."
The panel said: "The head of a national federation, the senior coach of a major national team and a marketing consultant for the IAAF conspired together (and, it may yet be proven with others too) to conceal for more than three years anti-doping violations by an athlete at what appeared to be the highest pinnacle of her sport," the IAAF's ethics commission's findings state.
"They acted dishonestly and corruptly and did unprecedented damage to the sport of track and field which, by their actions, they have brought into serious disrepute."
Shobukhova's 38-month ban from track and field was reduced by seven months after she turned whistleblower for the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).
Russia have been banned from international athletics competition after a report by Wada's independent commission alleged the country was guilty of "state-sponsored doping".
http://www.bbc.com/sport/athletics/35249955'Performance analysis and Froome not being clean was a media driven story. I haven’t heard one guy in the peloton say a negative thing about Froome, and I haven’t heard a single person in the peloton suggest Froome isn’t clean.' TSP0 -
Wasn't Coe's d deputy linked to Diack? He's under investigation following emails sent to Diack I think relating to thinking more about Russian doping. The accusation is he was talking delaying Russian doping allegations until after the world championships in Russia I think in 2013. I think he's taken a step back while being investigated.
Interesting that Diack is the son of Coe's predecessor. What, if anything, does that say about the organization? Is it a FIFA waiting to come out? I hope not because I like athletics as much as cycling and hope they clear their own house not wait for the FBI or other force of law and order to get involved. No equivalent to the raiding of the team hotel of a tour team mid tour. Or the prospect of the old leadership being dismantled by prosecutions around the world.0 -

With so many sports still sticking their heads in the sand, it doesn't matter if it was 10, 15 or 20 years ago. The cheats need to be exposed and so too do the sports that continue to pretend they don't have a problem.
It the blood bags reveal that certain football teams cheated their way to European and world titles, or that tennis players cheated their way to Grand Slams, then the reputational damage to those individuals and teams might just stick.
How many are now involved in coaching and administration of their sports.
Many don't want the old guard involved in cycling as they are not fit and proper, and the same should apply in other sports.0 -

Is the correct answer - but one that most other sports don't want to face up too. Hence the IAAF fiasco.Trail fun - Transition Bandit

Hmm. There's a fair dollop of Ed Warner PR puffery going on there:
1. Athletics operates under the WADA Code, so in all major things they have to be Code-compliant.
2. Lifetime bans for 1st offences won't fly as deemed disproportionate - and he knows that
3. Even say 8 year bans for 1st office as opposed to 4 years since new version of the Code effective Jan 2014 - would be outside the Code
4. Current version of the Code is fixed till 2021 (IIRC). Cant be changed till then, and then its only after all other sports and NADOs have had their say - and they might likely deem 8 years excessive. Athletics can shout for 8 years all they like - but they are only one sport
5. Lifetime bans from the Olympics. Warner has convenient amnesia. Think back to LaShawn Merritt and Dwain Chambers who took their bans re the US & GB Olympic eligibility, to CAS - and won
6. Sponsors must no longer offer contracts to athletes who've served bank. Ha! Warner will enjoy the phone call from Nike Oregon asking him what the hell he thinks he's doing, and reminding him of certain $$ that flow UKA's way
7. Nulling existing WR records. WR holders would more than reasonably take their cases to CAS - and they'd win. Besides, who's to say that a new WR set next week by X or Y, would be achieved in any cleaner way than the one it was replacing

PR puffery of course. It serves to distance UK Athletics from the IAAF and Seb. And if there is more sh*t about to go down then creating distance is not a bad idea.
Note also that Paula has now come out strongly against any re-setting of records.0 -

Surely she'd be ok with it if it would improve the credibility of the sport she so loves.0 -

Bullsheet. Just because you have doubts about her.
Radcliffe says nothing. 'oh look, she's very quiet, must be because she has something to hide'
Radcliffe says 'On yer bike', and its 'oh, surely if she really cares about anti-doping, she'd make a sacrifice'. Which is of course code for 'she's guilty as hell'
If I were an athlete, I'd react exactly the same way i.e. you can fark right off, Ed Warner0
