One of us?
Public schoolboy?
Speak for yourself.
My point exactly... hence the I put the phrase in quotes...0 -
Yeah. Guess we can't all be graduates of the university of life/school of hard knocks/<generic cliched inverse snob class chat>0

yeah yeah... my point is that the only thing that seems to differentiate Coe from Bubkha is that Coe is English-speaking and comes from the "right sort of background" (note the quotes). His track record on tackling doping/corruption is sketchy and so I don't see why we should be making the argument that he's better than the other option who is being characterised as the "Putin's chum"...0 -

RR2, given that Bubka is Ukrainian (and head of the Ukrainian NOC), surely he ain't going to be Putin's biggest chum right now...
You know that the entire population of Ukraine are not aligned in their feelings re Russia, dont you?
And there is always, always, expediency.
Bubka is thick as, with Putin
And Crimea hasnt changed that one bit0 -

I have enough family there to know... but ta!
Bubkha may be thick as with Putin. But honestly isn't Coe as well...0 -

Dick Dastardly would probably be a better choice than either.0 -

What I am pointing out - to anyone who just wants to see Coe resign - is be prepared that what follows could be worse. 'Anyone would be better' is a claim made more in hope and ignorance, than anchored in reality
EDIT: unless its Rick
Though you know its an unpaid role, dont you, Rick?0 -

You'd have to claim for the Waldorf and stay at William Hague's house Rick.0 -

Isnt that what all the bungs \ bribes are for ?
Also if your the president just make up a new rule that you get paid, problem solved0 -
just for clarificaiton whilst Lord Coe is many things and has the integrity / morals of an alleycat, he was never a public schoolboy. He went to Comprehensives in Sheffield and then Loughborough University (and even I got in there).
It made good press in the late 70s / early 80s for him to be painted as some middle-class nice boy vs. Ovett the working class lad, in reality Ovett's school (Varndean I think) was a bloody good one by all accounts. Ovett was just more developed at 17/18 so never needed to think about University.0 -

Any realist knows that getting rid of one person ain't going to lance the boil. All I'm saying is that Coe as President is just as questionable as Bubka. And if Coe goes, it aint the end of the world.
Incidentally on Bubka, his views on Russia may be affected by this factBubka was born in Luhansk and grew up in Donetsk, then part of the Soviet Union. Both cities in eastern Ukraine are now held by Russian-backed rebels.0 -

Stunning documentary. You don't realise the array and complexity of drugs available. The cynical side of me says that drugs use is impossible to trace and therefore any number of people could be on them.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Familiar feeling to how this Peyton Manning story is unfolding. Despite two sources claiming Manning had HGH delivered to his home, despite Manning being a confirmed client of the clinic, and despite the doctor appearing in a successful federal indictment for receiving HGH illegally from China, the whole story is being ignored because Al Jazeera are "untrustworthy" and "anti-American".
The whole story is being covered (or not covered) very, very differently to how the North American sports entertainment media usually covers lurid or controversial stories. That the Manning family are NFL royalty is playing a very large part.0 -

Al Jazeera do good work generally.
Corroborated sources before reporting etc.
True. They have a decent reputation.0 -

Ach come on... they're just a tool to facilitate Qatar's global takeover...0 -
It really has been a massive flashback. Megastar threatening legal action, and commentators ignoring the pesky details of the accusations, and instead accusing jealous foreign media of being anti-American. It can only end well!0

Yet the Americans - through WADA, are more than happy to swing the lead in the direction of Russia and oddly, went after LA with some amount of vengeance.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
The problems in sport are proportional to the attitude of the governing body. Whilst no one is naive enough to think that cycling is clean, it is one of the very best on limiting the benefits of doping through the testing. If baseball players get one blood test per annum it's hardly surprising that there are massive problems. Ok the ABP has its limitations but it does appear to stop excess.0

The Players Associations are all-powerful in NFL, NBA and NHL, and put every obstacle in the way of attempts to up the ante on doping controls, aided by governing structures that dont want to know, and team owners that dont care. The MLB have tried to make some inroads, to do them justice. The others...meh...0 -
The NFL has bigger headaches than PEDs: chronic brain injury often leading to suicide. Sufferers often shoot themselves in the chest to preserve their brains for study. It's a bit of a buzz kill. From that point on, the NFL played a powerful role in determining what happened to Junior Seau's brain -- who studied it and where. In the hours, days and weeks after Seau shot himself in the chest with a .357 Magnum revolver -- the shocking end to the life of one of the most admired players in history -- the league muscled aside independent researchers, ignored a previous commitment to Boston University and directed Seau's brain to the National Institutes of Health -- four months before the NFL donated $30 million to that institution for concussion and other research. In court papers filed last year in connection to a class-action head trauma lawsuit brought by former players, the NFL acknowledged that it expects about a third of its retirees will develop long-term cognitive problems. A federal judge in April granted approval to a $1 billion settlement to that case in April, although many players have opted out....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0

It's a curious, incestuous relationship the American sports and entertainment media has with doping + the national sports leagues. All the major networks (ESPN, CBS, FOX) have billion dollar ties to the leagues, and those same networks drive, and ultimately decide which stories become scandals, and which are swept under the rug. As RR said, Major League Baseball have taken steps, in part because they had no choice what with almost every great player from the 80s and 90s being busted. The NFL meanwhile? Rotten.
In the NFL this season there have been 12 (by my count) PED suspensions, and 30+ substance abuse suspensions - including sure-fire Hall of Fame players, but there is never any suggestion of a doping problem. This current story involves one of the greatest players of all-time, and two other legitimate stars, yet it's being treated as a non-story by all the major networks.
CBS spent 4 hours covering the Denver Broncos (who Peyton Manning plays for) game on Sunday, and there was not a single mention of the story. The lead commentator previously called it a non-story. Another of CBS's lead NFL voices called Al Jazeera "anti-American". Oh, CBS also happen to employ Peyton Manning's father, and have huge contracts with the NFL.
A lead ESPN voice said ESPN will only cover it when the team owners demand it. He also happens to be a former Denver Bronco, a friend of Peyton Manning, and well you get the picture.
Why does it take Al Jazeera to uncover these stories? I wonder.0
